Director of the Iraqi Center for Strategic Studies, Ghazi Faisal, revealed that “Israel” threatened to bomb more than 35 sites of armed factions in Iraq.
Faisal said, “The current escalation between Israel and Gaza on the one hand, and between Israel and Lebanon on the other hand, as well as Iran’s entry into the conflict crisis, portends Iraq’s entry into the cycle of conflict.”
He added, "Israel is expected to respond to the Iranian attack carried out by the Revolutionary Guards last night," indicating that "Israel also threatened to bomb more than 35 strategic and military sites of armed factions in Iraq."
Faisal pointed out that “Iraq as a state will not enter into the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, but the armed factions may enter as a party to the regional equation of war through missiles and drones, and may use Syrian territory due to its proximity to Israel.”
According to the London-based newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani asked Shiite figures to mediate to rein in the factions and prevent them from getting involved in the war between the Lebanese Hezbollah and Israel, after information was circulated within the Coordination Framework that Israel had identified 35 Iraqi targets.
According to sources who spoke to the newspaper, “Al-Sudani and the Coordination Framework forces have concerns about the American and Israeli reaction to the factions’ involvement in the war,” despite the confirmation by the official spokesman for the Iraqi government, Bassem Al-Awadi, that “the Iraqi parties have maintained their avoidance of escalation.”
The sources indicated that “Al-Sudani is focusing at this critical stage on sending messages to others warning them of the seriousness of the situation regarding military escalation towards any external target. He has enlisted the help of an influential religious figure and a leader of one of the factions, in addition to Al-Hakim, and will ask them to intervene effectively to calm the situation and avoid any escalation.”
However, one source downplays the possibility that some faction leaders will respond to the efforts of Al-Sudani or others, as they “are aware of the seriousness and sensitivity of the situation, and they think that the current battle is an existential battle and targets the axis of resistance at its core.”
