    Economy News - Baghdad
The Karbala Municipality announced, on Thursday, the start of planting gardens and green spaces within residential neighborhoods.
The director of the governorate's municipality, Hassan Al-Sharifi, said in a statement reported by the official news agency, and reviewed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that "within the national campaign launched by the Prime Minister to increase green spaces and plant trees, the Karbala Municipality has begun planting many gardens and green spaces within residential neighborhoods, in addition to planting trees and turf in the medians of public streets and entrances to the city," noting that "there is also a campaign to plant the Najaf Ashraf Road from the Al-Haidariya checkpoint, the entrance to Karbala, to the city center, Haider Al-Karrar Street, which included the Baghdad axis, where the streets and medians from the Al-Wand checkpoint towards Karbala were planted and rehabilitated."
Al-Sharifi pointed out that "more than 200 sanitation workers are employed in the Karbala Municipality to take care of the green spaces, starting from the external checkpoints to the Karbala Governorate," explaining that "there is an increase in planting trees inside residential neighborhoods to provide a clean environment and suitable atmosphere for the governorate, in addition to eliminating desertification and reducing the high temperatures in the summer."
He pointed out that "the problem of drought and the scarcity of groundwater, which is represented by the depletion of dozens of wells, calls for adopting modern irrigation methods such as spraying, dripping and rationalizing water," stressing that "the holy city of Karbala is at the forefront of the governorates in terms of the number of green spaces, and this is what the Karbala citizen and the visitor from outside the governorate notices."
Al-Sharifi added, "There are special financial tabs in the Karbala Municipality to increase green spaces, as these amounts were invested to rehabilitate the median strips, city entrances and parks," calling at the same time for "increasing the financial amounts and government support."
Al-Sharifi called on "civil society organizations in the holy city of Karbala to raise awareness for a national tree-planting campaign that urges citizens to plant trees inside and in front of their homes and on sidewalks, to improve the environmental reality of the governorate and reduce global warming that most countries in the world suffer from."
