The General Company for Ports announced, today, Wednesday, the stages of work on the immersed tunnel project in Basra, while indicating the imminent completion of the second phase of the project.
The company's general manager, Farhan Al-Fartousi, said in an interview with the Iraqi News Agency, which was followed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that "work is continuing on the submerged tunnel project, which is one of the projects of the Faw Port, as the ten parts of the tunnel were submerged by 11.3 meters, as part of the first phase of the submersion operations," noting that "the second phase is expected to be completed in the coming days, as the water level will reach 14.5 meters."
He added, "The submersion operations will continue for thirty days, during which accurate examinations and tests will be conducted on the ten pieces," noting that "the excavator is working to complete the path of the tunnel under the Khor Al-Zubair Canal, or what is known as the "tunnel trench."
It is noteworthy that the length of the tunnel is 2444 meters, while the length of the submerged part under the canal reaches 1266 meters, and it will work to connect the port of Al-Faw to the highway in Umm Qasr, which will contribute to reducing the arrival time from two hours to 35 minutes.
