Millions of fish are reported to to have washed up on beaches of Sandy Bay, an island near Castlegregory on the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland
The discovery was made by local people two days ago.
The amount of fish is astonishing and the phenomenon has never been seen on the island, at least not on such a "Biblical" scale.
The fish are mainly sprat but there are also mackerel among the decaying bodies on the shore that will now have to be disposed of by Kerry County Council.
An indication as to the cause of death is no birds or scavengers have eaten the dead fish which would indicate an algae tidal bloom as being responsible for the die off

Record-breaking algae bloom continues to expand across our oceans reaching as far north as the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and as far south as Mexico on the western coast of the US but disturbing reports of algae blooms or "dead zone" are being reported all over the northern hemisphere.
While algae blooms happen every year, the size of the blooms this year is significantly higher with record high temperatures of the oceans on this El-Nino year.

Dead zones are hypoxic (low-oxygen) areas in the world's oceans and large lakes, caused by "excessive nutrient pollution from human activities coupled with other factors that deplete the oxygen required to support most marine life in bottom and near-bottom water.
In the 1970s oceanographers began noting increased instances of dead zones.
These occur near inhabited coastlines, where aquatic life is most concentrated.
(The vast middle portions of the oceans, which naturally have little life, are not considered "dead zones".)

Red circles show the location and size of many dead zones. Black dots show dead zones of unknown size. The size and number of marine dead zones—areas where the deep water is so low in dissolved oxygen that sea creatures can't survive—have grown explosively in the past half-century
