Jewish Archive Back to Baghdad Soon

    Saturday, 06 April 2013 11:03

    Shafaq
News/Iraqi Ministry of Foreign affairs revealed the American Archive
Museum agreed to transfer a part of the Iraqi Jewish Archive to Baghdad
after the completion of its maintenance.

    Deputy Foreign minister,
Labeed al- Abawi told “Shafaq News” that “a technical committee
composed of a number of experts representing several Iraqi ministries
will travel to Washington soon to complete the ceremony of receiving the
    Jewish Archive”.

He acknowledged that “an agreement took place
with the American side to bury the damaged parts of this archive in the
Jewish cemetery of Iraqis in New York City”.

    The Iraqi- Jewish
Archive was transferred to the United State of America post 2003
    when
troops found it in a basement under the building of the Iraqi
intelligence headquarters in Mansour town western Baghdad.

Sources say that there are limited numbers of Jews in the country.

The Jewish Archive belongs to Jews who lived in Iraq but immigrated in 1984.

    Currently,
Iraqi Jews in Israel demand to get the archive but the government of
Iraq rejected saying that it is a national legacy and must be returned
    to the home.

The archive contains documents, religious books and
stories and some of the Jews features in the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries, as well as some educational school books.
