New York - Iraq Press - April 17 / April: the New York Times reported on Sunday that the Saudi government has threatened to sell the US assets ofhundreds of billions of dollars if Congress passed abill that holds UK responsibility for any role in theSeptember 11 , 2001 attacks.
The newspaper said the Saudi foreign minister ,Adel al - Jubeir told US lawmakers in March / March that "Saudi Arabia will find themselves forced to sell Treasury bonds and other assets in theUnited States worth $ 750 billion , fearing to be exposed to the freezing of US judicial orders."
And it stripped the bill passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this year , foreign governments on issues of immunity "caused by aterrorist attack that killed Americans on American territory."
The newspaper said , citing US administration officials and congressional aides said that " the Saudi threats were the focus ofheated debate in recent weeks between legislators and officials , the State Department and the Pentagon."
She added that the Obama administration pressed Congress to prevent the adoption of the law.
She said the US State Department said it "stands firmly with the victims of these violent attacks and their families."
John Kirby said US State Department spokesman , "we remain committed to offer to justice terrorists and those who haveused terrorism to further their ideas corrupt."
The judge rejected the US in September / September lawsuits against Saudi Arabia set up by the families of victims of theattacks, saying that the Kingdom has sovereign immunity from claims for compensation from the families and insurance companies that covered the losses suffered by the building owners and companies.
