Game Day: Winnipeg Jets at Edmonton Oilers

    Game Day:
Edmonton Oilers (14-11-5) vs Winnipeg Jets (13-14-3) *prior to Calgary game Saturday, 7:30 pm, SportsNet, 630 CHED.
    Last Five:
    Oilers (1-1-3)
    L 3-2 SO @ Minnesota
    L 6-5 @ Philadelphia
    L 4-3 OT @Buffalo.
    L 2-1 OT vs Minnesota
    W 3-2 vs Anaheim.
    Jets (playing Flames Saturday)
    L 4-3 SO vs Detroit.
    W 2-1 @ Chicago
    W 3-2 OT @ St. Louis
    L 6-3 vs Edmonton
    Who To Watch:
    Oilers
D Andrej Sekera - By far the best Oilers defenceman right now. Played 29 minutes in the OT loss to the Wild in Minnesota. Last three games he’s played 29:09 (Minnesota) 26:42 (Philadelphia) and 26:03 (Buffalo). On a defence with lots of minus guys, he’s plus-9. After an off-year, he’s bounced back mightily and nobody is mentioning that $5.5 million salary right now.
    Jets
W Patrik Laine - He went into the Calgary game Saturday with 17 goals as an 18-year-old. First and only visit by the possible rookie of the year. People keep saying he’s doing most of the work on the power play with his terrific release but he’s had 10 even-strength goals. He might score 50 as a rookie, something only Teemu Selanne (76), Mike Bossy (53) and Joe Nieuwendyk (51) have done.
    What’s In The Tank?
    Oilers
    1/2
    Jets
    1/2
    How They Match Up
    Forwards- Oilers
Tough to beat 1-2 punch of McDavid and Draisaitl.
    Defence—Jets
Byfuglien had off-night last time team’s met but Oilers don’t have a Big Buff.
    Goaltending- Oilers
Talbot has beaten them twice already this year.
    Power play — Oilers
Edmonton is No. 5 in league.
    Penalty Kill—Oilers
Jets have had to kill 109 penalties, tied with Calgary for most.
    Intangibles- Oilers
Mark Letestu has three goals against Jets this year.
    Overall - Oilers
They’ve beaten up on Central this year, going 6-1-2.
    Set Up Notes:
The Oilers blanked the Jets 3-0 in the Heritage Classic outdoor game in October and romped 6-3 in the last meeting in Winnipeg... This is the one and only time Edmonton will see Jets winger Patrik Laine, the possible rookie of the year. This is the last game between the clubs which is silly because the Oilers have yet to play San Jose and the Sharks are in the Pacific Division... Jets assigned one of their prize rookies, winger Kyle Conner to their AHL Manitoba Moose after the former first-round draft only managed one goal in 19 games ... One of the pleasant surprises for the Jets has been defenceman Josh Morrissey, playing with Dustin Byfuglien, in their top offensive pair... Jets goaltending tandem of Connor Hellybuyck and Michael Hutchinson is eighth worst with a 2.83 average and a mediocre .904 save percentage but Hutchinson has been solid lately. Hellebucyk will likely get the start against Oilers. He’s played the first two ... Jets first-line centre Mark Scheifele, who led the NHL in scoring for 13 days this season, played right wing with Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews for Todd McLellan at the World Cup. He has one of the top 10 shots in the league and a 20.6 shooting percentage ... The Oilers have the third most shots (954) in the league and are averaging 32 shots a game (fourth-best) ... Jesse Puljujarvi, in and out of the lineup and possibly destined for a trip to the AHL farm in Bakersfield, hasn’t scored since opening night against Calgary and it was on the power play ... Leon Draisaitl has four three-point games, second only to Connor McDavid’s six ... McDavid has had 10 games where he hasn’t got a point in his first 30 games... Drake Caggiula had lots of jump alongside McDavid in Minnesota and he'll likely keep his spot there on right wing with Milan Lucic on left
    Injuries:
Oilers— Darnell Nurse (sprained ankle), Brandon Davidson (shoulder), Mark Fayne (groin), Iiro Pakarinen (knee).

Jets— Joel Armia (ankle), Tyler Myers (lower-body), Nic Petan (lower-body).
