Blues vs Flyers and 9 NHL nuggets

The Blues return from their Christmas break on Wednesday, taking on the Philadelphia Flyers at 7pm at the Scottrade. The Flyers have been streaky on the road in December, winning their first four road games before losing their last two. Comparatively, the Blues started December at home going 3-0-1 before only going 1-1-1 in their last three.

While the Flyers may be in 5th place in the Metropolitan division, they have the 10th best point percentage ratio, one spot better than the Blues. The Flyers are giving up 0.01 more goals per game than the Blues while scoring 0.17 more which makes sense since both teams are in the top 7 in shots against per game and the Flyers are 6th on shots for per game while the Blues are only 25th. The Flyers rank 6th on the power play, just ahead of the Blues who are in 7th.

As you would expect, Jakub Voracek, Claude Giroux and Wayne SImmonds lead the Flyers offense with 37 goals and 95 points among them. What may surprise Blues fans is that Mark Streit is currently outproducing Shayne Gostisbehere with more goals and more points per game.

Steve Mason has grabbed the number one goaltending spot this season, posting a 90.8 save percentage and a 2.69 goals against average.

Coming into the game, Blues fans should be worried about the team. Forget for a minute that Paul Stastny is on injured reserve with an upper body injury. Look at their recent games.

In their last game against the Lightning, the team took a 2-0 lead three quarters of the way through the first period only to give up 5 unanswered goals

While the Blues did win their second to last game in overtime, the Blues surrendered every lead they had within minutes of taking it, allowing the Stars to score 4 minutes after their first goal and less than 1 minute after their second goal.

Three games ago, the Blues lost a third period lead against the Oilers before losing the game in overtime. Four games ago, another third period lead lost against the Blackhawks, giving up three unanswered third period goals. Six games ago, yet another third period lead lost to the Predators, giving up 4 unanswered third period goals.

Is this a trend yet? Some would say it’s a continued trend and that coach Ken Hitchcock still hasn’t been able to instill that killer instinct. They can’t master that “foot on the throat step” that Hitchcock referred to back in April of 2014.

Report suggest that Carter Hutton will get the nod over Jake Allen tomorrow night. It also sounds like Paul Stastny is skating again.

Jammer’s 9 NHL Nuggets at Christmas
    1) Who would have thought the Blue Jackets would have the highest point percentage? More than 10% higher than the next best team.
    2) Who would have thought the Wild would have the highest point percentage in the Western conference? Bruce Boudreau fans are happy this Christmas. The question is will they be happy this summer.
    3) Of course, many are not surprised that the top 3 point percentage teams in the Western Conference are from the Central division.
    4) The Blackhawks are no longer the worst penalty kill team. The Sabres now have the dubious honor.
    5) The top 6 scorers in the NHL are all averaging at least a point per game with Sidney Crosby taking the cake at 1.31.
    6) More impressive is Crosby’s .8275 goals per game pace.
    7) Jeff Carter, Patrik Laine, and David Pastrnak are all tied for 2nd in goals with 19 but Pastrnak has only played 29 games.
    8) Dan Girardi only scores important goals. All 3 of his goals are game winners.
    9) Sergei Bobrovsky has been getting some Vezina love lately but Devan Dubnyk still deserves it. Best save percentage, best GAA, and top 5 wins.

It’s a great day for hockey.

Fellow Hockeybuzz bloggers Nashville Predator's Paul McCann, Winnipeg Jet's Peter Tessier and Minnesota Wild's Dan Wallace have generously agreed to a friendly charity wager. We were hoping to do the whole division but don't have it fully represented yet. The blogger whose team finishes the highest the standings at the end of the year gets to pick a charity to whom the others donate in their name.
