Thursday night in Tampa the Wild fall 4-1, while the Blackhawks were hosting the Ducks in a goaltender duel in Chicago. If the Hawks win, they leap frog the Wild into first.

Fast forward, the Hawks are unable to solve Jonathan Bernier of the Ducks and fall 1-0. Friday comes Wild head to Sunrise, Hawks to Detroit. Hawks lose 4-2, Wild gut out a 7-4 come from behind victory over the Panthers and now their lead in the West is at 3 heading to Chicago for their showdown with the Hawks tomorrow afternoon.

Enough about Chicago, let's talk Wild.

Last night's game started off pretty well for the Wild, and to be quite honest they played a pretty solid 60 minutes, even though the score was not indicative of that.

The first Wild goal was the result of excellent puck movement and player awareness as Jason Zucker ultimately tipped home Jonas Brodin's point shot for the 1-0 lead. Florida tied it on the powerplay shortly thereafter and the game is on.

I don't like to single out players very often because I think we as fans tend to do that far too often and many times too easily without watching or thinking it through fully. That said, I am going to say that the backup goaltender situation with the Wild is a huge question mark after the latest turn of events last night.

I have watched Darcy Kuemper all season long through his early struggles, and Bruce Boudreau calling him out to be better, to his raised level of play mid season, to this low we are now experiencing.

It is clear that Boudreau has little confidence in Kuemper given his last two starts, he had to be pulled in favor of Dubnyk, both times in tie game situations. After the first of the two in Winnipeg, Boudreau said he felt that Kuemper was pretty rattled and he didn't know if he could withstand the rest of the game. That is the head coach talking about one of his 2 players that play the most critical position on the ice!

I watched Kuemper last night and what really alarms me is how much movement he has when shots are heading his way. The 2nd Panthers goal was a wrist shot, from Panther defenseman, Mark Pysyk, that Kuemper clearly saw and whiffed at with his glove. He had another save that he made later in the 2nd where he dove forward to make the play. The third goal was just awful and that was all BB had to see as Dubnyk entered in the third.

This is not the time to have a question mark anywhere on your roster, but especially in net. Kuemper has worked very hard to stay sharp, and it is not at all easy to be a backup goalie playing once every few weeks, but this isn't ability we are concerned with here. I believe that Kuemper's issue appear's on the surface to be technical, but the deeper root seems to be in his head. He is over playing the puck, rather than playing his postion with a stable base, tracking the puck, reading and reacting.

When pro athletes have those mental blocks, they are often too great to overcome. Here's hoping that Kuemper can find some cerebral healing.

Aside from Kuemper's woes last night, the Wild showed signs that their mini slump was just that and their return to form is imminent. A few really good signs are two straight strong games from Charlie Coyle, and his empty net goal may be just what he needs to get him jumpstarted again. Jonas Brodin has been a huge factor in both games in Florida as has Marco Scandella.

Three points up on Chicago with a game in hand, heading to Chicago with yet another chance to put a stronghold on the lead. Last night's win was big in a lot of ways, but most important was the confidence being regained heading into tomorrow's showdown with the Hawks.
