China's Defense Ministry has announced that it is moving ahead with plans to reduce the number of troops in the military after President Xi Jinping announced in 2015 that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) will release 300,000 troops, with the operation to be completed by the end of 2017.
Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said there were "detailed measures" put in place for the downsizing, noting that "things are going smoothly", Reuters reported.
"This year the army will achieve its goals set according to schedule," he said.
China hopes that these measures will provide greater funding for sophisticated high-tech weapons for its naval and air forces, and a smaller, more strategic army, despite the difficulty it faces in resolving the problems of soldiers who have been demobilized in the past.
In February, the country witnessed demonstrations by veterans of the army over a two-day period demanding their late pension funds in a new wave of protests highlighting the difficulties of dealing with demobilized soldiers.
