Rapid Reactions: Bolts Keep Rolling With Fourth Straight Win

The Tampa Bay Lightning obtained their fourth-straight victory and maintained their position in the push for the playoffs with last night's 5-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings.

The Bolts completed their five-game regular season series against the Wings going 5-0-0, sweeping Detroit in a season series for the first time in franchise history. Tampa has now won nine in a row in the regular season against the Red Wings.

    Stepping Up

The Lightning received some pretty bad news when they were notified that Nikita Kucherov would be unable to play Thursday night due to an illness. Talk about awful timing, losing your hottest/best player at the most crucial time of the season. Still, the Bolts were able to soldier on, acquiring scoring from less likely members of the pack. J.T. Brown, Andrej Sustr, and Yanni Gourde all scored their third goals of the season. Gourde found the pack of the net for the second-straight contest giving him the first goal streak of his career.

Tampa also had some regulars get their names on the score sheet with Alex Killorn and Jonathan Drouin both lighting the lamp. Drouin now has 21 goals on the year and three over the last two games.

    Maintaining Pace

Of course what takes place in each individual game is important. However, at this point in the season, it is all about the big picture. Tampa's fourth-straight victory keeps the train moving at a fast and powerful pace as they look to eventually jump over the Bruins or the Maple Leafs for a playoff position.

Unfortunately, every team also in the hunt for a playoff spot, except for the Islanders, also secured victories last night. So as far as standings go, the Lightning stay right where they are for the time being. They remain three points behind Boston for the final wild-card spot and four points behind Toronto for third place in the Atlantic Division. Carolina's late-season surge has the Hurricanes right behind the Bolts with 84 points. The New York Islanders were the only team to take a step back. They are now tied with the Philadelphia Flyers with 82 points and could have seen their playoff hopes get flushed down the toilet with last night's blowout loss.

    On Tap

The Lightning continue their four-game homestand on Saturday night when the Montreal Canadiens come to town. The Bruins, Maple Leafs, Hurricanes, and Flyers also have games on Saturday night, which makes another Bolts victory very crucial.
