Lucic and Oilers bury Sharks with a big third period

The San Jose Sharks missed a golden opportunity to send a message to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night.

Edmonton jumped back into second place in the Pacific with a 4-3 triumph at SAP Center. The Sharks clung to a 2-1 after 40 minutes. I say "clung" because they were basically hanging on for dear life. They lost the special teams battlee and their grip in the third period. Milan Lucic and his mates pounced.

The Oilers scored two power play goals in the third period, while the Sharks took an 0-for-4 with a man advantage. Marcus Sorensen missed a big opportunity early third period to gives the Sharks a 3-1, but Cam Talbot stopped him on his penalty shot attempt.

Speaking of Sorenson's penalty shot....If he scores it's a 3-1 game. He doesn't, the Sharks take a careless too-many-men penalty, Lucic scores on the ensuing power play and it snowballed from there.

Lucic completed a natural hat trick in the third period. He used his size and strength to make room for himself around Martin Jones' crease. That type of effort by the former LA King and Boston Bruin is exactly why the suddenly dangerous Oilers signed him in the off season.

Can you imagine a shorthanded Sharks team trying slowdown Lucic in a seven game series?

    Me neither.

Connor McDavid scored Edmonton's first goal of the game goal. Meanwhile, Joel Ward and Brent Burns scored for the Sharks.

Despite falling behind in the game, the Oilers were the better team. Edmonton out shot the Sharks by a 2-to-1 margin and held San Jose to a season-low 15 shots.

The loss all but guaranteed the Sharks will finish third in the Pacific and if the season ended today they would be traveling to Edmonton for game one of the playoffs. That's a very scary proposition when you consider how bad the Sharks have been on the road lately (3-7 in last 10) and in general. Oh, one more thing - the Oilers won the last three meetings too.

San Jose had won its previous two games, both against Vancouver and it appeared they were snapping out of a month-long funk. Nope, not at all. In fact, the Sharks haven't defeated a playoff team since Jan. 31st. More doom and gloom.

The Sharks end the regular season on Saturday when they host the Calgary Flames.
