Bulgaria will take over the rotating EU presidency from Estonia for the first time since joining the bloc in 2007.
The Bulgarian presidency said in a statement that in the field of combating terrorism, the focus will be on the efficiency of the application of the system of [Passenger Passenger Register], reduce extremism and address the phenomenon of foreign fighters.
It pledged to work on the effective implementation of mechanisms to raise the level of security of the EU population and to strengthen the control of borders as well as better manage migration operations.
The Bulgarian presidency also pledged to support the efforts of the EU High Representative for Foreign and Political Affairs and Security Federica Mujerini to find a peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria, resume the Geneva negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations and support its efforts to achieve national reconciliation and reconstruction in Iraq and find a political solution to the crisis in Libya.
She stressed the continued work to push the European Union's efforts to support the Middle East peace process in order to reach a two-state solution and to support cooperation between the European Union and NATO.
Bulgaria will preside over the current EU presidency for six months under the slogan "United stand strong".
The European Union presidency has four priorities: the future of Europe, youth, Western Balkans, security, stability and the digital economy.
