(Al-Furat News) Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait have pledged 2.5 billion dollars in aid to Jordan to help them after a wave of protests against economic austerity measures.
The aid includes a deposit at the Central Bank of Jordan, World Bank guarantees for Jordan, annual support to the Jordanian government's five-year budget, and funding from development funds for development projects in the country, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.
The King of Jordan Abdullah II participated in a meeting hosted by Saudi Arabia in order to help the Jordanian government to overcome the crisis experienced by, and saw the emergence of demonstrations against the raising of fuel and electricity prices.
European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mujerini announced on Sunday aid for Jordan worth 20 million euros.
Jordan, which relies on international financial aid, is suffering from debt after taking a loan of $ 723 million from the International Monetary Fund in 2016.
The austerity measures announced by the government led to demonstrations in protest against the high prices of fuel and electricity, which resulted in the resignation of Prime Minister Hani al-Mulqi.
The authorities announced last Thursday that they had withdrawn legislation that provoked popular anger, but had great difficulty in matching popular demands with IMF recommendations to reduce the weight of public debt.
Jordan blames the unrest in the region, as well as the burden of refugees fleeing war in Syria, and complains that it does not have enough international support for its projects.
The World Bank says Jordan has low growth prospects this year, while 18.5 percent of the population is unemployed
