said a senior US official, said that the Saudi authorities did not show enough of the "credibility" in how to manage the investigation into the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"From our point of view, the accounts that the Saudi side has produced during the judicial proceedings have not yet reached the level of credibility and responsibility required," the official told reporters, asking not to be named.

"It is in the interest of the Saudis to deal with this problem firmly to get rid of this burden and to put an end to this incident which caused this uproar," he said, referring to the killing of a Saudi journalist in early October at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The official said that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who will visit Riyadh during his upcoming Middle East tour as of next Tuesday, "will raise the issue" with Saudi officials.

"We will continue to press the officials to tell us what happened and to show credibility about the judicial proceedings that began this week," he said.

"The Saudis should provide a credible account of what happened," the official said, stressing that "the identities of all the perpetrators and planners of the Saudis should be revealed and held accountable."
