(Reuters) - The Saudi government is preparing to acknowledge the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul, US media said, in a language that absolves Saudi Crown Prince Prince Mohammed bin Salman of any responsibility for his death.
CNN quoted two sources as saying that Saudi Arabia was preparing a report acknowledging Khashoggi's death for an error while being interrogated during an operation he was to abduct from Turkey.
One source told the network that the report would probably conclude that "the operation took place without permission, and those involved will be held accountable."
One source explained that the report was still under preparation, and that changes might occur.
NBC News quoted three sources as saying that the Saudi government was considering a plan to recognize Khashoggi's death in his consulate in Istanbul and was preparing explanations to absolve Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of responsibility by telling him he had not ordered and was not killed.
One source said that close associates of the Saudi leadership had learned that the kingdom would claim that "rogue officers" had killed Khashoggi during a cross-examination or abduction attempt.
One source said the US government was not yet fully aware of what the Saudis intended to offer, but intended to acknowledge responsibility for the mistake.
Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappeared after entering his consulate in Istanbul on October 2, and the Turkish security services, according to several leaks, are likely to be killed inside the consulate by a Saudi team.
Following CNN's publication of the report on the presumed Saudi report, US President Donald Trump said he had seen the news but "no one knows" if it was official, he said.
Trump said in a press statement on Monday that he had sent his foreign minister, Mike Pompeo, to Saudi Arabia to learn more closely what had happened, adding that the minister had instructions to find out what had happened.
The US president earlier raised the possibility of being "rogue killers" behind Khashoggi's disappearance after speaking on the phone with King Salman bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud.

A source at the Turkish prosecutor's office revealed that preliminary examinations inside the Saudi consulate showed evidence of the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, despite attempts to obliterate them.

The source said the evidence found supported Khashoggi's suspicion of a murder.
In a related context, media reported that Saudi Arabia is preparing to recognize Khashoggi's death by mistake during the investigation.
She added, quoting sources, that the objective of the operation was the abduction of Khashoggi and not kill him.
US President Donald Trump said the Saudi journalist could have been killed by "rogue killers" following a call he made today with Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz.
"The king has categorically denied knowing anything," Trump said in a statement from the White House Park. "I do not want to speculate on his whereabouts, but it seemed to me that it might have happened to rogue murderers. Who knows?"
Trump called for an immediate investigation into the case of the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Spokesman Heather Noiret said that Minister Mike Pompeo was heading to Riyadh on Monday to discuss the file with the Saudi authorities.
Trump said on Saturday that Riyadh could be behind Khashoggi's disappearance, threatening it with "severe punishment" if true.
Saudi Arabia on Sunday rejected threats of sanctions over the disappearance of the journalist, saying it would respond to any move against it by "greater action" before the Saudi embassy issued an explanation for the Riyadh statement and praised the US administration's failure to reach conclusions on Khashoggi's case.
The Turkish presidency announced that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed Khashoggi's case yesterday during a telephone conversation with King Salman.
According to a source in the Turkish presidency, both sides spoke of "the importance of establishing a joint working group within the framework of the investigation."
Turkish police said they had a voice recording of Khashoggi's death inside the consulate
