On November 3, 2016, Iran's Assistant Energy Minister Hoshenk Falahtian said Iraq's debt to Iran over electricity supplies was $ 1 billion.

At the time, Falahtian said Iran had cut Iraq's debts for electricity, in response to a request from the Iraqi government, but Baghdad had defaulted on payments, the Mehr news agency reported.

Iran supplies Iraq with between 1,500 and 2,000 megawatts of electricity under an agreement signed by the two countries in 2005.
