On Saturday morning, angry Iraqi protesters demolished a number of party headquarters in the city of Nasiriyah, southern Iraq, hours after a motorcycle exploded inside the main protest square in the city.
Local media and activists reported that the demolitions included the headquarters of the Dawa Party, led by former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, the al-Hikma Movement led by Ammar al-Hakim, and the Badr Organization of Hadi al-Ameri.
And before that, the city witnessed on Friday evening burning operations of the headquarters of parties and militias loyal to Tehran, including the headquarters of Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq led by Qais Khazali, and the Badr Organization led by Hadi al-Amiri.
The explosion of the bicycle bomb that targeted one of the protesters' tents in Al-Haboubi Square in the center of Nasiriya, injured a number of people and completely burned the tent, on Friday evening.
Since the outbreak of the protests last October, the city of Nasiriyah has witnessed similar burning of the headquarters of the parties and militias that the protesters say have become a starting point for launching attacks against them.
The demonstrators burned the outer gate to the entrance to the House of Representatives building in Basra.
An Associated Press photographer saw protesters clash with security forces by throwing Molotov cocktails at them.
At least eight security forces were wounded in the clashes, according to Ali Al-Bayati, spokesman for the Independent High Commission for Human Rights.
The demonstrators had gathered to demand the resignation of Basra's governor, Asaad Al-Eidani, after two activists were shot dead in the city last week.
Activist Reham Yaqoub was shot dead in Basra on Wednesday by unknown assailants. Days earlier, gunmen killed activist Tahseen Osama, who participated in the October demonstrations, prompting dozens of protesters to take to the streets. Police responded by firing live ammunition at the protesters.
In response, Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi sacked Basra Police Chief Rashid Fleih. However, the protesters said that this was not enough, denouncing that the government did not take any step regarding the killing of activists. They carried banners calling for the activists' killers to be held accountable.
