The Turkish ambassador to Baghdad, Fatih Yildiz, said, Saturday, that Iraq is not properly exploiting its water resources, indicating that the memorandum of understanding concluded between his country and Iraq regarding water, will enter into force soon.
The Turkish Anadolu Agency quoted Yildiz as saying that: "Turkey looks positively on cooperation with Iraq regarding water, and that the Turkish presidential envoy participated in the first international water conference in Baghdad with a delegation of 8 people."
Yildiz pointed out that "Turkey and Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation on water," noting that "it will enter into force soon."
And it became clear that (Aroglu) visited Iraq in 2019, and submitted an action plan on the water problem to the Iraqi side at that time.
He stressed that "the work plan included plans and projects in specific areas according to their need for water."
Yildiz said that "the difference in views between his country and Iraq regarding the issue of water, stems from Baghdad's view of the issue as a problem of sharing water."
He pointed out that "the problem has dimensions beyond water quotas, and lies in the failure of Iraq to use water in an optimal manner."
He pointed out that "the drought in 2018, and the floods in 2019, showed that Iraq is not properly exploiting its water resources."
He stressed his country's readiness to share its experiences with Iraq in this regard, both in terms of technical and human resources.
These statements came on the sidelines of the launch of the first international water conference in Baghdad, with the participation of the Turkish presidential envoy to Iraq, Faisal Aroglu, through a video call.
The conference will be attended by the Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, and representatives of the Netherlands, Syria and Jordan.
It is expected that the activities of the first international water conference will last for two days.
In December 2014, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding in the field of water, which includes 12 articles, the most prominent of which is the emphasis on the importance of cooperation in the field of water resources management of the Tigris and Euphrates, determining the water share of each country in the waters of the two rivers, and stressing the importance of assessing water resources.
