The United States agreed to extend Iraq's exemption from sanctions on Iran for its energy imports, for a period of four months.
An Iraqi official spoke to Agence France-Presse, on Wednesday, March 31, about the first amnesty offered by the administration of the US President, Joe Biden, which extends for the longest period allowed by law, and comes days before a "strategic dialogue" between the two countries at the request of Baghdad. .

Iraq, despite being an oil country, relies heavily on Iran in the field of energy, as it imports a third of its consumption needs of gas and electricity due to its dilapidated infrastructure.
The new exemption represents a continuation of the US policy of excluding Iraq from sanctions on economic dealings with the Iranian government or companies specifically in the energy file, the last of which was under the administration of former President Donald Trump in January.
The new exemption allows Baghdad to continue importing electricity and gas from Iran until August, according to the Iraqi official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Agence France-Presse says, "The Biden administration wants to extend a hand to the Iraqi government through this step, before a new strategic dialogue is scheduled to be launched hypothetically on the seventh of April, while the government is facing challenges represented by the great influence of armed factions loyal to Iran that impedes Its work, and before a hot summer, it is expected that Iraq will witness popular protests against the background of power cuts.
During the past few months, Iran has cut off a large part of the gas supply to Iraq, demanding to pay more than $ 6 billion in overdue dues, while press reports indicate that Iraqi officials have received a direct bash from Tehran as a result of not releasing those dues that are deposited in an account at the Trade Bank. While Washington prohibits the disbursement of those sums in US dollars.
The French Press Agency quoted Western and Iraqi sources as saying, "Iraqi officials received a green light from the United States to release the money owed to Iran in return for gas imports, amounting to two billion dollars, through a Swiss bank account."
