    • Baghdad - IQ

On Sunday (April 25, 2021), the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs revealed that there are 29,000 Bengali workers working in the Karbala Refinery and Basmajah housing complex, while noting that the official authorities do not have the real number of foreign workers in Iraq .
Al-Rikabi said, in a press statement, that "the Karbala refinery employs 18 thousand Bangladeshis compared to 2000 Iraqis, while 11 thousand Bengali work in the Basmajh complex."
He added, "The official authorities do not have the real number of foreign workers in Iraq."
The Minister of Labor suggested that "there are about 500 to 600 thousand foreign workers in Iraq."
Al-Rikabi pointed out that "most of the foreign workers enter through illegal means," explaining that "there are no official controls that limit the entry of foreign workers until now."
Iraqi law forces foreign companies to hire Iraqis in projects for the largest proportion of the workforce, but this is "being defrauded," according to experts.
According to a study by the Ministry of Planning, 20 percent of Iraqis suffer from unemployment, and the percentages in some provinces rise to 58 percent .
Specialists say that these numbers have "doubled" due to the "Corona" crisis and the great economic deterioration in the Iraqi market.
