On Friday, the Minister of Trade, Alaa Al-Jubouri, announced the addition of two items of tomato paste to the ration card items that will be distributed to citizens during the coming months.
Al-Jubouri said in a press statement received by "Al-Eqtisad News", "The Council of Ministers approved the one-basket project for the ration card items, adding tomato paste and legumes to the ration card items, as well as the four basic materials, sugar, edible oil, flour and rice."
He added, "The decision of the Council of Ministers in its last meeting contributed to supporting the ration card system in Iraq, as well as adding new materials to it and preparing the items with one basket for citizens throughout the country.
And the minister added, "The Prime Minister provided great support for the ration card by addressing the problems of the ration card and contributing to preparing two rations in the month of Ramadan, as well as approving one food basket that contributes to supplementing the ration card system and delivering foodstuffs to citizens covered by the ration card system."
He pointed out, "This project will contribute to supporting the ration card project and the stability of its processing mechanisms and contracting with sober global origins, and the financial allocation will be from the state's general budget or from the Ministry of Oil through allocating quantities of oil to purchase items."
Iraq adopted the ration card system following the issuance of UN Security Council Resolution No. 661 issued on August 6, 1990, which imposed an economic blockade on the country as a result of the previous regime’s invasion of Kuwait.
The ration card went through various stages between the prosperity and the multiplicity of its vocabulary after the United Nations agreement with Iraq, the so-called oil for food and medicine at the end of 1996, and the reduction of the vocabulary and its types decline with the end of the agreement after 2003.
