Yesterday, Wednesday, the Parliamentary Services and Reconstruction Committee confirmed its intention to legislate a law for the ownership of land and housing in return for a simple cash allowance, and while it indicated that this would contribute to the reduction of the 4,000 slums across Iraq, 1,200 of them in Baghdad, it called for those responsible for razing orchards to be held accountable. and sorted.
Member of the Committee, Representative Sana Al-Moussawi, stated in a statement to (Al-Mada), that "slums have become a major social problem for Iraqis, and solutions should be put in place for it at the legislative and executive levels."
Al-Moussawi added, "The citizens, when they went to the option of establishing slums because of destitution and poverty, and the lack of housing units, and the government has a constitutional obligation to provide them with housing."
She spoke about "the parliament's continued efforts to pass a law related to slums, and to own homes and plots of land for citizens in return for a simple financial compensation."
Al-Moussawi expressed her hope that "the law will be voted on during the remainder of the current parliamentary session and will not be carried over until after the elections."
For his part, the other committee member, MP Jassem Al-Bakhti, said, in an interview with Al-Mada, that “the capital witnessed a great transformation after 2003, with orchards bulldozed by gangs, especially in Baghdad and the rest of the Baghdad belt areas, and transformed into residential plots and sold to the needy.” .
He pointed out, "The forthcoming law regulates housing units after the number of slums across Iraq reached 4,000."
In addition, a member of the committee, MP Alaa Al-Rubaie, said that “the authorities responsible for organizing housing are supposed to fulfill their duties and make cities better, especially in the capital.”
Al-Rubaie told Al-Mada that "Baghdad has about 1,200 slum areas, and the reason for this is due to poor organization, and it is a joint responsibility of a number of sectoral parties."
