    The Mine Affairs Department of the Ministry of Health and Environment stated that more than 3 billion square meters that were contaminated with mines and unexploded bombs in Iraq have been cleaned and disinfected.
    The Director General of the Department, Engineer Dhafer Mahmoud, said: “The department, in cooperation with the supporting authorities, was able to clean about 3 billion and 97 million and 147 thousand and 162 square meters in all governorates through survey and removal work,” noting that “the remaining pollution area is estimated at two billion and 616 million and 375 thousand.” and 267 square metres. And he indicated that "with this, the department has cleaned more than 52% of the dangerous lands contaminated with mines, war remnants and explosive devices," noting that "the department launched during this year 13,357,970 square meters through survey and removal work."
    He added, "The issue of demining mines is very complex and sensitive, and there are many experts who were victims of its explosion, whether by death or disability."
    The United Nations Mine Action Department (UNMAS) estimated the area contaminated with mines and remnants of war at 3 billion square metres, making Iraq the most polluted country in the world in terms of the area of ​​the mined area.
    The senior director of the Iraq Program in the department, Per Ludhammer, said in a previous statement to Al-Sabah: The area contaminated with mines and war remnants in Iraq is two billion and 987 million and 275 thousand and 90 square meters, including 257 million and 378 thousand and 865 square meters in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, according to figures. provided by the government. Ludhammer confirms an increase in the number of war remnants and other forms of explosive materials, including innovative IEDs, after ISIS occupied a number of provinces, pointing out that there are no official statistics available on the rate and number of the increase.
