The intensity of the attacks launched by ISIS to sabotage power towers in Iraq has escalated, as part of a new tactic aimed at putting pressure on local authorities, according to specialists.
During the past few days, the file of electric power in Iraq came to the fore, with the sharp rise in temperatures, and the repeated targeting of transmission towers in remote areas, which caused the complete collapse of the system at the beginning of this month, and the resignation of Electricity Minister Majid Al-Hantoush.
For days, the electricity transmission towers have been subjected to detonation with explosive devices and time bombs by ISIS elements in some areas in which they are active, which poses a challenge to the security forces in stopping these attacks; Because of the presence of these towers in remote areas, unmarked or inhabited, which makes the movements of ISIS elements in them normal.

But the almost complete power outage in Iraq is not limited to “technical” reasons, and cannot be attributed exclusively to waste, corruption and mismanagement. In addition to corruption in the management of this file, a parallel “war” is taking place, its weapons, explosive devices and missiles, targeting towers and power stations in Iraq. Iraq and prevents the country from overcoming the electricity crisis, as the series of bombing high pressure towers returns on an almost daily basis, in the desert areas.
The attacks are concentrated in the governorates of Anbar, Diyala, and Salah al-Din, as well as the Jurf al-Sakhar area, south of the capital, Baghdad, but it has witnessed a shift during the past few days, towards the capital, Baghdad.
The Iraqi Ministry of Interior recently revealed plans to employ drones to protect power transmission lines, according to the ministry's spokesman, Major General Khaled Al-Muhanna.
Al-Muhanna stressed, “the pursuit of using drones to protect electrical lines,” noting that “there is negotiation with Chinese companies in this regard, in addition to the presence of international support for Iraq in this field.”

The spokesman indicated that "a contract will be signed to bring in aircraft to protect the borders and protect power lines and petroleum products."
Energy experts believe that electricity in Iraq has witnessed a slight improvement as a result of the increase in Iranian gas releases and the periodic maintenance carried out by the government in the recent period. However, the explosions on the lines contributed significantly to the decline in energy supply.
For his part, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, said that the current government has reached a good stage in the production of electric power, but there are repeated and intentional targeting of electric power towers in a number of provinces.
He added, in a session of the Iraqi government, that these targets affect the hours of supplying the regions with energy and exacerbate the suffering of the citizens.
Al-Kazemi directed the operational leaders and the intelligence services to address these targets, protect the energy towers, and pursue criminal groups.
In turn, a member of the Security Committee in the Baghdad Provincial Council, Saad al-Mutalibi, believes that “after the Iraqi people boycotted the 2018 elections, and the failure to form a parliament that truly represents the aspirations of citizens, political and security differences began to expand their circle, as they exchange accusations, and share responsibilities for failure, but rather It went wider than that, and the political procrastination began.”
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Al-Matalibi added, in a statement to “Al-Nour News” that, “Most likely we have reached the stage of the security breach, and each party accuses the other of being behind this targeting, especially since electricity is one of the easiest targets that are vulnerable to targeting, given that it is in remote areas, and it was There are videos of a Kurdish patrol attacking one of the transmission towers, but the issue is that the matter is close to Baghdad, which means that the government must take strict measures in the matter of protecting the towers.”
He continued, "At the same time, it is an indication of the escalation of political differences with the upcoming elections, and since the ministries are distributed in the form of quotas, the ministries of Health and Electricity are affiliated with one of the parties. Any failure in these two ministries will be the failure of the political bloc."
Attacks move towards Baghdad
During the past two days, areas in the capital, Baghdad, witnessed the targeting of electricity transmission towers, for the first time, since the start of those operations, which raised the astonishment of observers of the security situation, especially in light of international reports, which speak of the growing influence of ISIS in some areas of the country.
With this, fears are increasing that it may carry out operations from the terrorist organization in the heart of the Iraqi capital.

In the latest targeting operations, the Security Media Cell announced on Tuesday that it had thwarted the bombing of one of the main towers linking Baghdad and the Al-Quds Electricity Station.
The cell said in a statement: "The detachments of the Federal Intelligence and Investigations Agency in the Ministry of Interior thwarted the bombing of one of the main electrical towers linking Baghdad and Al-Quds Station."
She explained that "based on intelligence information regarding the intention of ISIS terrorist elements to detonate one of the main towers linking Baghdad and Al-Quds Electricity Station in the Al-Waziriya area, a working team was formed in light of the information, and in coordination with the First Division of the Federal Police, this attempt was thwarted and 8 planted explosives were seized. on the 4 pillars of the tower and dismantled it by the technical effort.”
Official data, issued by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior, indicate that since the beginning of this year, and until this July, more than 100 towers have been vandalized, as well as 50 power transmission lines.

Politicians and security specialists believe that some of the operations targeting energy towers are not “terrorist” but rather “sabotage” carried out by influential parties aimed at keeping the energy file in a deteriorating situation and benefiting from maintenance and protection contracts for energy towers.
For his part, a member of the Security and Defense Committee, MP Jassem Jbara, affirmed that "the attacks that targeted power transmission lines are completely unusual," noting that "more than 20 explosions were recorded in less than two months."
Jabara said in a press statement: "The towers that were targeted pass in areas controlled by the security forces, and they are in flat areas and close to the highway and security checkpoints, where they are easy to protect and not in rugged areas."
He ruled out that "ISIS is targeting these lines," noting that "the lines that are located in the rugged areas and behind the mountains, which it is logical to be targeted by ISIS, but they were not exposed to any bombing."
He added, "These attacks negatively affected the agricultural season in all western governorates, due to the lack of electrical power supply as a result of the explosion of power transmission towers."
