Shafaq News/ The Minister of Agriculture, Muhammad Karim al-Khafaji, announced on Wednesday that Iraq has achieved self-sufficiency in the potato crop, stressing the need to prevent its import or allow its smuggling into the country.
In a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, Al-Khafaji said that Al-Khafaji "called on the security services at the border crossings and the control to prevent the entry of potatoes that enter through smuggling."
He stressed that "the locally produced quantities of the potato crop are sufficient to cover daily consumption and achieve food security and have reached the stage of self-sufficiency, in addition to reaching the stage of export to regional neighboring countries."
He pointed out that "the production of this strategic crop is beginning to grow and increasing at an increasing pace as a result of the ministry's support by protecting the local product," stressing that "most of the cold stores are filled with this crop, and this came as a result of protecting the local product and preventing import for the second year in a row."
Al-Khafaji explained that the ministry "has prepared a plan in cooperation with a number of investors to find contracts with major potato producers in order to export their crops to the Gulf countries, and it has also facilitated all export procedures."
He added that "export signs began by allowing the export of quantities of the potato crop to the United Arab Emirates through Umm Qasr port during the past days, as well as understandings that will take place in the coming days with neighboring countries to open future horizons for the export of all agricultural crops that are surplus to need, including potatoes. ".
He pointed out that this matter "will contribute to increasing agricultural production and encouraging farmers, with the importance of tightening procedures to prevent the entry of this crop from all border crossings," stressing that the ministry "through follow-up indicated a number of border crossings through which the potato crop enters a lot during the past days."
Al-Khafaji called on the security services and border controls and outlets to “tighten the processes of preventing the entry of smuggled potatoes in order to protect the local product and encourage potato producers to continue farming and production, as well as enhancing the state’s revenues from hard currency and opening new horizons to absorb unemployment by providing job opportunities, in addition to achieving security.” food for citizens, as well as making the agricultural sector an important figure in the national economy.”
