Despite the widespread spread of vertical construction in the capital, Baghdad, and the launch of a number of its own projects, the housing crisis is still ravaging the city, which includes more than 9 million people.
During the past four years, a number of vertical construction projects were launched, as Iraqis began to get used to this type of housing little by little, in an effort to contain the housing crisis, especially since some of those projects were governmental.
However, the prices of those housing units were not suitable for most segments of society, and were mostly restricted to the rich and high-income segments, for a number of reasons.
Abu Muhammad al-Khafaji, 53, talks about his experience in searching for an apartment, as he believes that the offered prices were fictitious, ranging between $100,000 and $150,000, for the average type, offered to target the lower categories.
Al-Khafaji said, "How can someone whose income is less than $500 per month save an exorbitant amount to buy this unit, as there is unreasonable exaggeration, in this regard, that greatly exceeds its counterpart in Istanbul or Dubai, and this is unreasonable."
He added, "Governments repudiated their role in this regard, and their failure to establish parallel projects, at subsidized prices, made real estate whales sell as they wanted, in light of the increasing demand for housing."
Several years ago, the Iraqi government began constructing the Basmaya complex near the capital, Baghdad, but the sale procedures were described as complicated, as the government required those wishing to buy, a guarantee from a state employee, on the permanent owner, which constituted a heavy burden on those wishing to buy, due to The difficulty of obtaining a guarantee from employees who are often afraid of entering this battle, due to the risks that it carries, in the event that buyers avoid paying the premiums.

Because of this crisis, hundreds of slums have arisen, inhabited by poor and marginalized groups in society, such as orphans, workers in low-income professions, or beggary, as well as those covered by social benefits, which are aid provided by the government to some groups.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Planning announced that there are 4 thousand squatters scattered in all governorates, and 3 million and 300 thousand people live in them.
According to the ministry, Baghdad governorate occupies the first place in slums, with 522 thousand housing units, in addition to 700 units in Basra governorate, and Karbala governorate is the least in terms of the spread of slums with 98 slums.
Agricultural land converted to residential
The housing crisis also resulted in the bulldozing of dozens of orchards, and the sale of their lands in the form of housing plots, at reduced prices, although they are not proven by the official authorities, as residential, but rather as “agricultural”, which results in this conflicting major problems, reaching a limit Many residents lost their homes that they built on those lands, by demolishing them from the responsible authorities, for violating the laws.
In this context, the expert in economic affairs, Sarmad Al-Shammari, believes that "the emergence of the housing crisis, came due to the absence of planning, and the far-reaching vision of officials, about what the people will be like, after a few years to come, and this is what got us into this predicament, which we may need to years, to get out of it, in the event that proper procedures are followed.”
Al-Shammari said, "The imaginary prices of housing units do not come because of the high competitiveness of the capital, Baghdad, but because of the increase in demand, which prompted real estate owners to manipulate prices, and not take into account the country's economic situation."
He pointed out, "The need for the Iraqi government to intervene, through two tracks: the first is to establish similar projects, at competitive prices, that push others to reduce their prices, and the second is to reduce taxes and support the prices of construction materials, and even impose reasonable prices that achieve the interest of all parties, with regard to the sale of those units." .
