The guests came back empty-handed.. What happened in the Sadr-Frame meeting?
Shafaq News/ A political source close to the corridors of the meeting that brought together the leader of the Sadrist movement Muqtada al-Sadr with the leaders of the Coordination Framework revealed, on Wednesday, that the former refused to respond to the latter's demands regarding how to form the next Iraqi government.
The source told Shafaq News Agency, on condition of anonymity, that "the coordination framework delegation asked Al-Sadr to form the next government based on a political agreement with the participation of all political parties without excluding any party."
He added, "Al-Sadr informed the delegation that the success of the next government's work is linked to the existence of a real opposition within the parliament."
Al-Sadr affirmed his adherence to his position, according to the source, saying, "Our decision is one that the next government will be formed according to the political majority," stressing that "the parties that will not participate in the government must resort to the real opposition."
And the source continued, quoting Al-Sadr to the leaders of the framework, "If these parties are able to form a government, we will go to the opposition and we will continue our work from within Parliament in accordance with the law."
Al-Sadr also stressed, "The next government must be from the womb of the Iraqis without the interference of foreign parties or embassies in choosing the prime minister and the cabinet," according to what the source was quoted as saying during the meeting.
For his part, a source in the coordination framework, which includes the majority of Shiite forces, said that "the meeting between the delegation of the framework and al-Sadr was positive and responsible and based on the logic of giving priority to the state's interest and success in the next stage."
He added to Shafaq News Agency, "The search for guarantees of this will be completed in the coming days," without further details.
However, another informed source revealed an important point that was discussed at the meeting.
The source told Shafaq News Agency, "The most prominent message carried by the coordination framework of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, is that there is no renewal of the presidencies, nor a government without the participation of the State of Law coalition led by Nuri al-Maliki."
Al-Maliki is considered one of Sadr's fiercest opponents, who accuses him of being responsible for the deterioration of the country's conditions during his two terms (2006-2014) in power, especially the ISIS invasion of the north and west of the country in 2014.
This meeting came two days after the Federal Supreme Court approved the election results and rejected the lawsuit brought by Al-Amiri to cancel the results.
The Sadrist bloc topped the elections with 73 seats out of 329, followed by the Progress Alliance with 37 seats, the State of Law coalition with 33 seats, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party with 31 seats.
The Sadrist bloc seeks to form a majority government in alliance with the Sunni and Kurdish forces that won the elections, contrary to what was customary in previous sessions that witnessed the birth of consensual governments with the participation of all political forces.
But other Shiite forces within the coordination framework are working to find a foothold in the next government to preserve their gains despite losing many seats in the parliamentary elections that took place last October.
