    Yes Iraq: Baghdad

Within the margins of discussions about the Law on Emergency Support for Food Security, on which specialists recorded many comments, there is talk of steps to revitalize the agricultural sector in the country, which was emphasized by specialists instead of making the law move towards rentier consumption and the distribution of money to citizens in the form of food and catering.

The Minister of Agriculture, Muhammad Karim al-Khafaji, celebrated during his attendance at the Finance Committee meeting to discuss the food support law, after obtaining approval to re-support and revive the vital agricultural sector. This approval came during the ministry’s demands to support this “vital and important” sector, according to the ministry’s description.

Al-Khafaji said in a statement today, “The approval to re-support and revive the agricultural sector was represented by restoring support according to the established support percentage for fertilizers, feed and irrigation systems as well as pesticides, medicines and veterinary vaccines, as well as reconsidering the prices of strategic crops such as wheat, barley, rice and yellow corn, and allocating The necessary and required funds, in addition to allocating the amounts for compensation to fish farmers for the year 2019 by the Ministry of Finance in order to deliver the dues to the affected farmers and farmers within a period not exceeding one month.

He added that "the results of the meeting are a great achievement for the agricultural sector, both plant and animal, achieving food security and restoring life to agriculture in general. It was also agreed to allocate the necessary funds for maintaining and rehabilitating agricultural aircraft and facilitating their work, as well as securing the requirements required for the summer agricultural plan." For the future segment of farmers, farmers and investors in the poultry industry.”
The Ministerial Council for the Economy had decided to raise the price of a ton of wheat to 725,000 dinars per ton, after it was only 500 thousand dinars, after the rise in wheat prices globally, which may push farmers to encourage wheat cultivation, and sell it to the state instead of smuggling and selling it in foreign markets.

Experts agree on several obstacles facing the Iraqi agricultural sector, including supporting the farmer by providing seeds and fertilizers, as well as water quotas. This comes through spreading culture and helping farmers with modern technology for irrigation through sprinklers, which enhances agricultural production and preserves water from waste.
In addition, experts point out that controlling uncontrolled outlets and protecting the market from the importer will boost agricultural production and help farmers cultivate their lands.

26 million dunams are ready for cultivation.. Iraq only plants less than half of it
According to the figures of the Ministry of Agriculture, the arable agricultural lands amounting to 26 million dunams, but what Iraq cultivates may represent only 30% of this area.
Before Iraq entered a water crisis, in the penultimate winter season, Iraq planted only 15 million dunums, only 6 million dunams of which are irrigated and the other depends on rain, which means that 45% of the arable lands were neglected without cultivation.
As for the last winter season, the agricultural plan was reduced by half, and it is hoped that the summer agricultural plan will be reduced this season as well due to water scarcity, which means that what is cultivated of arable land may not exceed 30%.

Iraq lost 66% of its territory
In other estimates, experts indicate that Iraq wastes 75% of its lands without cultivation. Economist Khaled Zaki says that Iraq wastes three quarters of the available agricultural areas from the north to the south of the country, citing the reason for the decline of agriculture to poor planning and management in the Ministries of Agriculture and Resources aquatic.
According to Zaki, if Iraq continues its traditional agricultural methods, the current agricultural areas will witness a significant decline in the coming years, noting that the areas of land that were cultivated in the country before 2003 were estimated at 63 million dunams, which means a decline in agricultural areas during the 16 years past more than 33%.
