The Ministry of Agriculture revealed the development of hybrid seeds, mixing local, low-yielding, native to the Iraqi environment, with imported, high-yielding wheat, fruits, and vegetables, which would raise local production and lower prices.
The ministry’s advisor, Mahdi Al-Qaisi, said, “The plant in general is a living organism that needs suitable conditions for its growth, increased productivity, and resistance to the environment and external conditions, as well as agricultural crops that begin by selecting seeds with high purity and resistance to pests, salinity, and drought, in addition to their need for soil that contains good nutritional elements and is Free from waterlogging and salinity.”
The advisor explained that “the Ministry continues to develop hybrid seeds through the work of the Agricultural Research Department, which includes a number of researchers and specialists who are interested in improving the plant and developing new varieties. The best example of this is the development of varieties of wheat that have high baking qualities and are called by the industrial term (wheat suitable for vertical bread and bread. Al-Tannouri),” indicating that “that success came through scientific research through which we were able to develop a number of varieties, as the Ministry of Commerce proceeded to distribute that product within the ration card,” stressing “the continuation of the trend towards multiplying and developing other varieties, such as vegetable seeds, barley, and corn.” Noting that “vegetable seeds have high productivity and high prices.”
Al-Qaisi pointed out, “The Ministry of Agriculture adopted a national program that took it upon itself to develop hybrid seeds for vegetables by breeding them with our local seeds, which are native to the Iraqi environment but whose productivity is low. Our researchers worked to breed or hybridize these local seeds with imported seeds with high productivity, and the result was obtained.” Hybrid seeds characterized by high productivity and resistance to the environmental conditions existing in the country.”
The spokesman stated that these “hybrid seeds were registered with the National Committee for Registration and Approval of Agricultural Varieties in the Ministry of Agriculture and were considered individual and private property of the Agricultural Research Department and the Ministry,” stressing “the success in obtaining hybrid seeds for tomato, cucumber, eggplant, tree and many other crops, and that the Ministry is now in the stage of Establishing a local vegetable seed production industry for the purpose of covering the local need,” stressing that “this matter will achieve a number of important economic results, most notably reducing production costs and lowering the price of crops, and then the local product will be competitive with the imported product,” indicating that the Ministry has achieved advanced progress in this direction, Especially during the past year 2023.
