New York, USA (CNN)-- El Salvador embraced Bitcoin last year, as the government bought hundreds of cryptocurrencies, assuring that the cryptocurrency would become legal in the world.

But with the slowdown and huge losses incurred by the cryptocurrency market, El Salvador has lost the value of its investment by at least 50 million dollars, since, since September 2021, led by President Najib Boukil, it has bought 2,301 bitcoins worth 103 million dollars, now, worth about 51 million dollars.

The broader cryptocurrency market, which has grown rapidly during the pandemic, has been in decline in recent months, as as of Monday, the value of bitcoin had fallen below $24,000, hitting its lowest level since December 2020.

In response to a report that the decline represents only a small percentage of El Salvador's national budget, a response from the country's finance minister tweeted: "You're telling me we should buy more Bitcoin?"
