ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Iraq agreed today, Saturday, to extend the work of the United Nations investigation team to enhance accountability for crimes committed by ISIS (UNITAD).
This came during the periodic meeting of the Ministerial Council for National Security headed by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, according to an official statement.
The statement stated that the Ministerial Council "approved the extension of the work of the mission of the UN team to investigate the crimes of the terrorist organization ISIS (UNITAD)."
UNITAD was established by a UN Security Council resolution in 2017 to support local efforts to hold ISIS accountable in Iraq and Syria by collecting, preserving and storing evidence of actions that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
In another context, the Ministerial Council for National Security discussed the developments in the security situation in the country, where Al-Kazemi praised "the efforts of the armed forces as they continue their operations in pursuit of ISIS remnants."
Al-Kazemi stressed, according to the statement, "the need to redouble the security effort in combating organized crime and prosecuting drug gangs."
