Baghdad - Mawazine News
, the US Ambassador to Iraq, Elena Romanowski, called today, Saturday, for real measures by the Iraqi government to preserve the beauty of nature by addressing and following up on the climate change crisis.
In her speech regarding the climate crisis, Romanowski said, "I recently had the honor of meeting Iraqi artists whose paintings - which are displayed at the headquarters of the Iraqi Plastic Artists Association - depict beautiful landscapes in Iraq. The exhibition, which included a number of female artists, highlighted From the women, the light on the diversity of Iraq's environment, from its green valleys in the north to its lush marshes in the south, and the message I received from these artists was clear that we must act now to take action to protect this beauty of nature by addressing the issue of climate change."
She stated, "The impact of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions is not limited to changing the landscape, nor is it just a problem related to the future alone. Scorching temperatures, severe sandstorms and persistent drought have become prevalent conditions that negatively affect all aspects of the daily lives of millions of Iraqis. Undoubtedly, failure to take immediate action by governments around the world - including the Iraqi government - will accelerate these changes, transforming entire regions within the region that was once called " Fertile Crescent, to lands uninhabitable for future generations.
We must take immediate action to preserve and protect our planet, and the United States is committed to taking meaningful action in the global response to climate change. This month President (Biden) signed into law Historic legislative enactment guarantees the largest investment ever to face the climate crisis, an investment of $369 billion that would greatly contribute to improving energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This important legislation complements the series of efforts made by the United States to increase ambition Global Climate Action, led by the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Affairs, John Kerry.
She added, "This international commitment extends to assisting the Iraqi government in addressing the climate change crisis. In this context, we have provided Iraq, through the United States Agency for International Development, with support that includes funding, technical expertise, as well as the necessary systems to help it meet the challenges of the future. This support included improving Iraq's ability to manage its water issue and help expand access to this vital resource for more than ten million Iraqis We have joined forces with Iraqi businesses, schools, and local government institutions from Nineveh to Basra to seek to raise public awareness of the impacts of climate change. We have also supported the Iraqi government in developing a five-year climate strategy aimed at improving communication with farmers about climate forecasts, reducing damage to crops and soil, as well as protecting Iraq's food supply from threats posed by increasingly unstable weather."
She continued, "I am particularly proud of our efforts to build bridges between Iraqis and Americans to draw inspiration from our experiences that both countries are equally facing the challenges of climate change. Two weeks ago, more than two dozen Iraqi officials returned after concluding a visit that included locations across the country. The United States, where they met hydrologists and other experts and learned about how the United States is adapting to climate change. As one Iraqi participant said of that visit, “The knowledge we gained will help Iraq make better use of its limited water resources.” Presidential Emergency Adaptation and Resilience (PREPARE), the United States is committed to building stronger partnerships to enhance our collective ability to adapt to climate impacts.
She noted, "Of course, the climate crisis affects all countries, and no country can solve this crisis alone. Fortunately, the Iraqi government has joined the global efforts aimed at reducing emissions and switching to renewable energy as well as adopting smart climate practices. With the accession of the Iraqi government To the (Paris Agreement) in 2021, it has thus set an emissions reduction target of 1 to 2 percent as part of its first Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and has joined the global methane pledge. As the United States makes these historic commitments, it is now necessary for Iraq to begin taking the necessary measures to fulfill those commitments. In turn, we urge Iraq's leaders to take advantage of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 27), to be held later this year in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to reconsider and enhance Iraq's INDC as well as invest decisively In the technological and investment field necessary to achieve the set goals.
"The issue of reducing emissions in Iraq may seem difficult. The economic pressure to obtain the most carbon-neutral energy is a physical reality, perhaps in the Middle East more than anywhere else. However, this goal remains within reach and the current circumstances have advantages that Previously unimaginable to some, with rising oil prices generating trillions of dinars in reserves, Iraq is in a better position than ever to undertake infrastructure work and other investments that will be critical in conserving resources, reducing emissions and positively impacting over the daily lives of millions of Iraqis.
The ambassador concluded her speech, "The phenomenon of climate change is not concerned with political or ideological parties. As discussions continue on forming the next Iraqi government, one thing is clear: that Iraq's leaders, regardless of their affiliations, will continue efforts aimed at confronting the urgent need to extend a hand to their citizens." In order to adapt to the issue of a warming planet and a stressful environment, each of the hundreds of Iraqi citizens I met during my first months as an ambassador faces the same reality, regardless of their age, location or religion, we all have a role to play in giving our children Our grandchildren have the opportunity to live in a resilient, prosperous and equitable world without emissions.Through this, our work will not only revolve around preserving and protecting the natural landscapes, beautifully embodied in the drawings of Iraqi artists and considered the ancient heritage of which every Iraqi is proud, but we will also secure a safe, stable and vibrant planet for future generations around the world alike.
