Shafaq News/ The head of the General Union of Agricultural Cooperative Societies in Iraq, Hassan Nassif Al-Tamimi, called on Sunday the government, parliament and judiciary presidencies to take action to prevent the exacerbation of the phenomenon of razing orchards, stressing that this phenomenon negatively affected the country.
Al-Tamimi told Shafaq News Agency, "The bulldozing of orchards has become widely spread in all Iraqi governorates, including the capital, Baghdad, which will negatively affect Iraq's climate."
He pointed out that "there are bulldozing operations of orchards in Kufa, and this indicates the ignorance of some, and the weak application of the law. Babylon, Najaf and Karbala from the bulldozing of orchards.
Al-Tamimi called on the House of Representatives to "legislate a law that prevents bulldozing," while the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, called for "issuing a law that includes harsh penalties for anyone who carries out bulldozing."
Al-Tamimi believes that "there is a contradiction by the government, as it has allocated more than five billion dollars for the purpose of establishing green belts around cities, and at the same time orchards are being bulldozed, as it allocates funds for agriculture and on the other hand, orchards are bulldozed."
During the past decades, many orchards in Iraq witnessed a significant decline, due to the continuation of the bulldozing operations to convert them into residential complexes, in addition to the pests that kill them, affecting their production, in addition to the lack of water quotas that reach them.
The percentage of natural and artificial forests is only 1.6 percent of the total area of Iraq, according to a statistic prepared by the Central Bureau of Statistics in 2020.
The same statistic confirmed that 69% of Iraq's area is considered "degraded lands" because 15.6% of it is "desertified" and 53.9% is threatened by desertification.
Iraq needs 14 billion trees to revive areas that suffer from desertification, and preserve its environment from climate changes, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture.
It is worth noting that Iraq ranks first in the world affected by climate change, which portends a major drought, and is one of the countries most affected in terms of water scarcity and food security.
