Iraq determines the "extreme" poverty rate and proceeds to a new survey of the poor
Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Planning announced on Monday that extreme poverty in the country has reached 1%, confirming that the new poverty survey will be announced in all governorates soon.
Ministry spokesman Abdul-Zahra Al-Hindawi told Shafaq News Agency, "The percentage of extreme poverty is very low in Iraq, and they are threatened with hunger," explaining that "their percentage is almost negligible and amounts to approximately 1%."
"Today, we are preparing to launch a new poverty survey during the next few months, through a socio-economic survey that will give us new indicators about the poverty line, the poor, and the services they receive," Al-Hindawi added.
Al-Hindawi pointed out that "the last statistic of the poverty rate in Iraq was in 2018, and it amounted to 23%," noting that "there is an effort to conduct a poverty survey in 2020, but Corona and its repercussions hindered that."
He pointed out that "the expectations of the poverty rate in Iraq will be difficult without a full and comprehensive survey, but there may be an improvement from the previous survey."
The statistics of the Ministry of Planning for the year 2018 indicate that the poverty rate in the southern governorates is approximately 32%, and in the central governorates ranges between 20 to 21%, while the poverty rate in the governorates of the Kurdistan Region is between 12.5 to 13%, which is the same percentage in the capital, Baghdad. .
The concept of "poverty" differs from "extreme poverty" or "absolute poverty", as the latter was originally defined by the United Nations in 1995 as "a condition characterized by severe deprivation of basic human needs, including food, safe drinking water and sanitation facilities." Health, shelter, education and information depends not only on income but also on access to services.”
