Iraq began cooperating with the Iranian side to confront the effects of dust storms by sending delegations between the two countries.
The head of the National Working Group to mitigate the effects of dust storms, Ali Muhammad Tahmasebi, said that "Iran sent a team of experts to Iraq yesterday, Saturday; To visit sand and dust storm hotspots.
Tahmasibi added, according to a report by the Tehran Times, translated by Al-Mada, that "the problem of dust storms has plagued Iran for several years."
Tahmasebi pointed out that "most of the storms that enter Iran come from Iraq and Syria."
The report emphasized that "Iran and to solve this problem reached an agreement with the Iraqi Minister of Environment, Jassem Al-Falahi, last July, to send a delegation of experts to Iraq and visit the sources of dust storms that affect the region."
"The Iranian team consists of seven members representing the Ministry of Environment, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, Oil and Energy, and all other officials from the relevant authorities," Tahmasebi said.
Tahmasibi concluded, "An Iraqi team is supposed to come to Iran, after the end of yesterday's visit, to get to know the dirt centers inside the country and take measures and experiences to deal with the phenomenon, and then take practical measures in Iraq."
The report emphasized that "the phenomenon of dust storms plagued Iran and caused problems in many provinces."
He pointed out, "Natural and human factors are involved in the occurrence of this phenomenon and its seriousness, which is mainly caused by excessive water consumption and the drying up of reservoirs."
The report stated, "Internal dust sources are estimated at 34.6 million hectares, and produce an average of 4.22 million tons of dust annually, and about 1.460 million hectares of dry wetlands."
He noted, "about 4.23 million tons of dust are raised annually, which means that the loss of soil fertility will harm the agricultural sector."
The report stated, "All sources of dust storms do not exist in Iran, 300 million hectares in neighboring countries lead to the creation of these dusts, which transport dust to Iran. The total dust density is estimated to be around 150 million tons.
Letizia Rossano, director of the Asia-Pacific Center for Disaster Information Management Development, said: "Iran is at the forefront of understanding and dealing with the problem of sand and dust storms."
According to the report, Rossano added that "more than 80 percent of the total population of Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Iran are exposed to medium and high levels of poor air quality due to sand and dust storms."
The Iranian report revealed, "a 10-year plan is being prepared to mitigate internal hot spots that lead to the emergence of sand and dust storms."
And the report went on, “The Iranian plan includes the relevant institutions carrying out their tasks to limit the effects of dust storms, with the Natural Resources and Watershed Management Organization having to play the first role in the plan, and the planning and budget organization must be in place, through work.”
"Iraq is one of the countries most affected by climate change," Environment Minister Jassem Al-Falahi said in statements last week.
Al-Falahi added, "The United Nations report ranked Iraq as one of the five countries most affected by the issue of climate change."
He explained that "climate change has become one of the most important challenges that Iraq will face, as this was evident through the unprecedented rise in temperatures, in addition to the high rates of desertification and land degradation due to drought and the high rates of dust and sand storms."
Al-Falahi described, “The size of the losses incurred by Iraq as a result of climate change is enormous, whether in its economic or health aspect.”
He stressed that "the losses are estimated at about 10 billion dinars per day, due to the unprecedented overcrowding in emergency wards and the provision of treatments for patients with respiratory system, asthma and allergies due to (dust) storms."
Al-Falahi went on to “other losses in land and air transport and the export of oil resources, and the increase in the frequency of attacks by terrorist gangs during those storms.
