Iraqi-Iranian cooperation to confront dust storms

The Ministry of Agriculture is cooperating with the Iranian side to establish joint projects, especially in the border areas, to stop the encroachment of sand dunes and mitigate the impact of dust storms.
Director of the Department of Forestry and Desertification Control, Bassam Kanaan Abdul Jabbar, told Al-Sabah: There is cooperation with the Iranian side in the border areas to implement a pilot project to apply modern technologies between the two sides regarding stabilizing and encroaching sand dunes, confronting dust and dust storms, and carrying out preventive operations and earth dam work.
He pointed out the development of a joint plan to exchange experiences, information, data, and monitoring dusty areas, in addition to training, research, and capacity-building in the field of management and adaptation by using the capabilities of research and university centers between the two countries. He added that an Iranian delegation recently visited Wasit Governorate and the border areas that witness active dust and dust storms as they are effective hotspots for their movement, and it was agreed to reduce the negative effects of this phenomenon, and its economic, environmental, social and health impact on the two countries, in addition to agreeing to establish joint environmental projects.
Abdul-Jabbar stated that the department has a strategic plan to establish projects to stabilize sand dunes and desertification in a number of governorates, including Dhi Qar, within the “Al-Kati’a” project, through planting drought-tolerant trees, in addition to a project to stabilize sand dunes in Baiji district through planting thousands of tamarisk cuttings. Seedlings that can withstand drought, salinity, and climate change are considered windbreaks against dust storms.
