Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, confirmed today, Tuesday (1 November 2022), that his country rejects foreign interference in its affairs, noting that prior to the formation of the new government, a “comprehensive agreement” was signed, including the solution of the oil and security files in the Kurdistan Region.
Hussein stressed, in an interview with Al-Arabiya channel, that "the Iranian and Turkish interference in his country is rejected," stressing that it is "unacceptable," but he made it clear that Baghdad "is seeking to resolve the contentious points with Iran and Turkey through dialogue."
He added: We reject Iraq as an arena for regional and international conflicts.
He said: "The government wants to continue improving Iraq's relations with neighboring countries," noting that "the country's message is a message of peace and solidarity to face challenges."
On the participation in the Arab summit held in Algeria today, Hussein indicated that "the Iraqi issue will be strongly present."
He pointed out that this summit "will take decisions rejecting interference in Iraq's affairs."
With regard to the relationship with Saudi Arabia, Hussein stressed that "the Kingdom is an important Gulf state, and Baghdad's relationship with it is very important," adding that the government seeks to preserve it.
In addition, he explained that his country is "committed to the strategic agreement with the United States of America, but it has differences with Washington regarding its policy with neighboring countries."
On the internal level, Hussein explained that "some parties were seeking armed chaos in Iraq," and stressed that Prime Minister Muhammad Al-Sudani would take "additional steps to protect diplomatic and governmental institutions."
As for the relationship with the Kurdistan Region, Hussein pointed out that a comprehensive agreement was signed before the formation of the government, on several files, including the relationship between Erbil and Baghdad.
He concluded, "We agreed to solve all the problems of the Kurdistan Region, including the oil and security issues."
There are a number of outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad, including those related to the constitution, such as Article 140 of the disputed areas, and Article 110 of oil and gas, as well as contentious issues over oil policy between the two sides, and the Kurdistan Region’s share of financial budgets.
