A member of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, Raed Al-Maliki, considered, on Monday, the legislation of the Information Crimes Law to be important for regulating social media, which is dominated by chaos, stressing that there is a political division between those who fear its approval and those who support cyberspace control.
Al-Maliki said in a press statement, "There are fears from some that the Information Crimes Law will be used to silence mouths and confiscate freedom of opinion and expression in Iraq."
He added, "The Legal Committee is determined to achieve justice by involving all civil, popular, and political actors and civil society organizations before proceeding with the legislation of the law."
Al-Maliki explained that "there are concerns about the adoption of the law because it may result in restricting freedom of opinion and expression in Iraq," noting that "the information crimes law needs several steps to reduce many crimes, incitement and extortion."
