The House of Representatives is heading to amend the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, in order to add paragraphs that include "deterrent" penalties against traffickers.
A member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Skavan Sindi, said, "The weakness of the current drug law has led to an increase in the spread of this scourge, and it has become a problem that ravages society from Zakho to Basra," calling for "the enactment of strict and deterrent measures."
Sindi added, "There is a project to amend the law in the House of Representatives, and it was read in a first reading," expressing his hope that "the second reading will take place after the end of the legislative recess of Parliament," according to the official newspaper.
He explained, "The delay in the second reading came due to the transfer of paragraphs in the new amendments to legal experts in the government for study," noting that "the amendment of the law contains many necessities by providing clinics for drug users, and adding a deterrent penalty against traffickers, in addition to including procedures to dry up sources Importing and emphasizing customs and internal trade.
