On his first official visit to Egypt and his meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Sunday, the latter expressed to the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani, Egypt's desire to expedite the implementation of joint projects with Iraq in order to achieve their common goals of development, enhance communication between the two countries and meet the needs of the Iraqi people.
A spokesman for the Egyptian President, Ahmed Fahmy, said in a statement that President Sisi affirmed, in his meeting with Al-Sudani, Egypt's keenness to activate and diversify frameworks for joint cooperation with Iraq on the political, economic, commercial and cultural levels.
On the other hand, the Egyptian President expressed Egypt's desire to continue tripartite cooperation with Iraq and Jordan.
For his part, Al-Sudani affirmed Iraq's desire to enhance and expand solid cooperation with Egypt and benefit from the Egyptian experience in various fields.
Al-Sudani said that this is evident in Egypt's prominent role in adopting the mechanisms of joint Arab action in the face of the current crises and challenges in the region.
Al-Sudani praised Egypt's regional role in this regard and said that the country is a symbol of its role in maintaining stability and advancing development in the economic and social fields. Al-Sudani expressed his appreciation for Egypt's efforts to support Iraq at all levels.
Al-Sisi expressed Egypt's firm support for the security and stability of Iraq and its appreciation for the strategic relations between the two countries.
Al-Sisi highlighted Egypt's pledge to support Iraq and provide full support to the Iraqi people in all fields, especially in the field of combating terrorism and enhancing security and stability.
The Egyptian Cabinet stated in a statement that it was agreed during the Sudanese meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Mustafa Madbouly, to assign the concerned ministers in both governments to work during the next two months to activate the memorandums of understanding that were signed between the two countries.
The two officials agreed that this should coincide with the preparations for the next round of meetings of the joint Iraqi-Egyptian higher committee to ensure the achievement of results that meet the aspirations of the two peoples for a prosperous future.
Al-Sudani stressed the need to redouble efforts during the next two months to complete memorandums of understanding and agreements that will be signed during the joint committee meetings.
Egypt and Iraq have intensified their bilateral cooperation in recent years and embarked on a number of joint development projects, in addition to Jordan as part of their joint tripartite cooperation mechanism.
The three countries signed many agreements to strengthen relations and implement joint projects, including the project to link electric power between the three countries.
The foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan and Iraq had held a series of periodic meetings to strengthen the mechanism of their joint tripartite cooperation.
Jordan has expressed plans to supply Iraq with electric power in 2023, after completing the required infrastructure.
Egypt, which is more than 800 miles away from Iraq, has also made plans to transmit electric power to Iraq via Jordan by linking their transmission line network.
In addition, the three countries mentioned that they are also working to establish an industrial city on the Iraqi-Jordanian border.
The leaders of the three countries always reiterate the need to accelerate the implementation of their joint projects and remove the barriers facing them.
The Egyptian Prime Minister, Madbouly, said during the meeting regarding the project to link the electricity networks of the three countries that Egypt already has an electrical connection with Jordan with a capacity of 550 megawatts, and that work is underway to enhance the capacity of this line in order to connect it to Iraq.
Madbouly pointed out the possibility of strengthening the power line linking Egypt and Jordan with another capacity of 2 to 3 gigawatts.
Al-Sudani said that the first phase of the project to connect the three-way electricity network is hoped to be completed in June. Al-Sudani also revealed consultations to establish a logistical area on the Iraqi-Jordanian border to contribute to securing goods and merchandise.
He said that Egypt can benefit from this region to supply the Iraqi markets with Egyptian goods.
Al-Sudani highlighted the great opportunities available to Egyptian companies to contribute to investment projects covered by the Iraqi government's budget.
