Electricity: We promised the government to provide a stable 24,000 megawatts in May

Baghdad / Firas Adnan
The Ministry of Electricity talked about making promises to ensure the provision of 24 thousand megawatts in the month of May, stressing that these rates will be stable, and while talking about the importance of contracts concluded with the German company Siemens, it indicated that its preparations for the summer began early by introducing 6 thousand megawatts in maintenance.
"The current government has provided great support and strategic solutions in order to strengthen the electricity file in Iraq," said ministry spokesman Ahmed Musa.
Moussa continued, "One of the aspects of support is the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the German company Siemens, which resulted in three contracts for the Sadr gas stations, Al-Rashid and Kirkuk gas stations with a capacity of 1400 megawatts."
He noted, "These contracts came in addition to the memorandum of understanding signed with the German side, to carry out long-term maintenance of the power plants."
Moussa stressed, "This development is the first stage, and it will be followed by a second and a third stage, in order to complete a series of projects with Cinems as an important and major partner."
He added, "The second and third phases require the establishment of stations that operate on associated gas, which burns in the atmosphere, while addressing the transportation sector by removing bottlenecks and serving some governorates to increase disposal capacities."
Moussa believes that “establishing stations that operate on associated gas requires reassurance about the existence, exploitation and investment of this type of gas.”
And he called, “to keep pace with the electricity demand by having a fuel plan,” noting that “our work is linked to the Ministry of Oil, so it is not possible to proceed with supporting the electricity file without the presence of fuel.”
Moussa added, “The ministry has informed Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani that the development of the electricity file depends on finding a fuel plan represented by investing in gas fields, or exploiting the associated gas by establishing stations that operate on this type of fuel.”
And he stated, "The ministry's plan, which was discussed and voted on in the ministerial platform, is to establish stations that operate on various types of fuel, which are thermal stations, if the release of fuel, whether national or resource, lags behind."
He pointed out, "These contracts currently signed are for long-term maintenance, up to five years, for these generating units," stressing that "the ministerial curriculum has devoted great attention to the electricity file."
Moussa explained, "What the government is proposing is consistent with the ministry's plans to increase production, by granting appropriate powers and providing financial allocations."
He stressed, "This comes to complete the emergency plan that the ministry is working on to keep pace with the peak loads during the next summer season, as well as the strategic plan that requires thermal and combined-cycle plants, linking projects with neighboring countries, and turning to solar energies."
Moussa continues, "The government's interest in investing in gas fields is an important step in the electricity industry, in conjunction with efforts to install combined cycles that do not need fuel."
And he goes on to say that “dealing with Siemens does not mean closing the door to other companies, as the doors are open to everyone, and there are companies of different nationalities operating in Iraq, such as Chinese, Turkish, Korean and Iranian.”
Moussa went on to say, "The memorandums of understanding focused on increasing production and adding generational capacities and the transport sector as well, through the establishment of transmission lines and the installation of power transformers to increase discharge capacities."
And he stressed, “Achieving reliability in electricity is by connecting all stations in the governorates with lines called (Rank), to ensure stability.”
Moussa talked about “a promise made by the ministry to the government to reach a load rate of 24,000 megawatts on the first of May, and this means achieving stability for these rates.”
He pointed out, "In the past period, we have reached these rates, but soon we went back for various reasons, most notably climate change."
Moussa concluded, "The ministry has begun early preparations for next summer, by entering 6,000 megawatts under maintenance, and we will prepare them at the specified date, with emphasis on the fact that there is a decline in the gas supplied, which cost us 6,000 megawatts."
For his part, a member of the Parliamentary Energy Committee, Dakhil Rady, said, “There are plans by the ministry to increase production by installing new generation stations, maintaining the stalled units, relying on solar energy, and trying to find ways to rationalize.”
Radi added, "The Energy Committee will put pressure on the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Oil and coordinate with the Ministry of Electricity to find immediate solutions and not repeat what happened in terms of overloads and stoppages."
And he pointed out, “The committee will also ask the Presidency of the House of Representatives to provide the support the ministry needs to enable it to continue and sustain production and improve transportation and distribution networks that also suffer from problems.”
Radi went on to "the need for cooperation between the Ministries of Electricity and Oil in terms of providing the fuel plan for the stations by ensuring the best equipment for the citizen."
The electricity file is one of the most important problems that Iraq has been suffering from over the past years, and despite spending 80 billion dollars, citizens still depend on private generators to provide their needs.
