UNESCO confirms remarkable progress in the project to revive Mosul and Basra
Translated by: Hamed Ahmed
A United Nations agency spoke about a project to revive Mosul and Basra, emphasizing the endeavor to develop youth skills to restore cultural heritage, stressing that the project focuses on empowering the female component and youth alike in the two Iraqi governorates, stressing the importance of strengthening people's feelings and society by continuing to communicate with their past.
A UNESCO report, translated by Al-Mada, stated that “after years of war, battles and destruction in Iraq, UNESCO, in cooperation with the European Union, launched a project to revive the cities of Mosul and Basra.”
The report continued, "This project, which is funded by the European Union, is vital because it allows the country's young people to develop their technical capabilities and skills in a comprehensive manner, in a way that serves to restore the cultural heritage and develop their capabilities in the field of work." He explained, "Junaid Sursh Wali, Director of the Cultural Department at UNESCO, indicated that (the project to revive the ancient cities of Mosul and Basra is another testimony to the firm partnership between UNESCO and the European Union in the field of preserving cultural heritage)."
"Our shared commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the two cities as a means of building resilient, sustainable communities is the driving force behind our action," Wali continued, according to the report.
And the report added, “Within the framework of the project, UNESCO is working, accompanied by the Ministry of Culture, local authorities and community members, to enhance the aspect of economic growth by focusing on the reconstruction of heritage homes and schools and the revitalization of local cultural life.” He stressed, "One of the components of the project in Mosul was the reconstruction of Al-Ikhlas School, which was destroyed during the war."
The report continues, “With the support of the local community, UNESCO is rebuilding a unique child-friendly school that will provide students with a safe and stable environment for learning and which, beyond that, will open a path of hope and renewal for generations to come in a city that was famous for its education and scholarly talent.” The report noted that “UNESCO says that the project has witnessed great progress in developing and modernizing public infrastructure and recovering and restoring more than 124 heritage houses in the old city of Mosul, out of 80 houses that have completed work on them and handed them over to their owners.”
And he added, “In the old city of Basra, 11 heritage houses are being rehabilitated, whose facades are distinguished by what is known as the Shanasheel, in addition to the repair and restoration of the historical canal that extends along those houses.”
The report continues, “The rehabilitation and reconstruction activities that accompanied these interventions formed a support factor for the vocational education and training programs through which the youth of the two cities learn the skills of traditional crafts and techniques for preserving the cultural and cultural heritage.” And he stressed, "The benefit that young people get is two-fold, on the one hand there are increasing numbers of local skills and competencies who are able to assign ongoing and future rehabilitation and maintenance work in both cities."
On the other hand, better employment opportunities will be created for young workers who have acquired advanced vocational skills in the labor market.
The report pointed out, "The project focuses on empowering women and youth alike in Basra and Mosul, and provides training and support for young workers and technicians who have an interest in practicing construction and heritage preservation professions, and creates job opportunities for them and promotes local economic growth."
The report stated, “While the objectives of the project are clarified, UNESCO and the European Union remain committed to the task of reviving Mosul and Basra through contributions that preserve and develop heritage, enhance people’s and society’s feelings of continuing communication with their past, and develop a stronger peaceful sense of their identity through which they move into the future with confidence.” And he went on to say that “a delegation from the European Union, which funded the project for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of a number of heritage houses in Al-Shanashil Street, in the Nazran area in Old Basra, had seen, on a previous visit to Basra, the plans of the rehabilitation project.”
The report added, "The delegation was briefed on the progress that has been made in the campaign, including with regard to training young job seekers in Basra, of whom more than 300 young men have been trained."
And the report went on, “This is in the vocational training center of the Social Security Directorate, in which young people are trained at the expense of UNESCO and the European Union, and they will be part of the process of rehabilitating heritage houses in Basra after acquiring technical skills in restoration, electricity, carpentry, and others.”
UNESCO is a specialized agency affiliated with the United Nations, established in 1945. It is currently headed by Frenchwoman Audrey Azoulay after winning the elections held in 2017, when she obtained 30 votes, ahead of Qatari candidate Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari by two votes.
The main objective of the organization is to contribute to the establishment of peace and security by raising the level of cooperation between the countries of the world in the fields of education and culture in order to establish universal respect for justice, the rule of law, human rights and the principles of basic freedom.
