Yesterday, Monday, the Ministry of Industry and Minerals announced the intensification of its preparations and mobilization of its efforts to produce pivot sprinkler irrigation systems, according to the specifications of the specialized American company, Vale, while noting that the life span of these sprinklers reaches 50 years.
The ministry’s spokeswoman, Duha al-Jubouri, said in a press statement that, “In implementation of the Prime Minister’s directives and with personal follow-up and a directive from the Minister of Industry and Minerals, the General Company for the Automotive Industry and Equipment, one of the companies of the Ministry of Industry and Minerals, has intensified its preparations for the production of pivot sprinkler irrigation systems.”
And Al-Jubouri continued, “This is in accordance with the requirements and needs of the Ministry of Agriculture and in line with the government’s plans and efforts to rationalize water consumption, provide agricultural crops, and achieve food security.”
She pointed out, "Efforts and capabilities are mobilized in the project of producing pivot sprinkler irrigation systems in the company's mechanical factory to collect and produce pivot sprinklers that will be contracted with the Ministry of Agriculture for the purpose of processing them in support of the agricultural sector and securing agricultural products for the Iraqi citizen."
And she emphasized that “the company has the ability and readiness to produce these sprinklers according to the partnership contract with the private sector and the specifications of the American Valley Company, which are used to irrigate areas of 60, 80 and 120 dunums, with an annual capacity of 1,100 sprinklers that can be increased according to work hours.”
Al-Jubouri added, "These economic systems contribute to reducing the amount of water used to irrigate crops and cover vast agricultural areas."
Al-Jubouri went on to say, “This is in addition to its advantages in being easy to move, conforming to international specifications and measurements, suitable for the Iraqi atmosphere and environmental conditions, and having a default life of up to (50) years, in addition to granting a one-year warranty and after-sales maintenance services.”
A spokesman for the Ministry of Water Resources, Khaled Shamal, said in statements last week that “the agricultural sector consumes more than 75% of the total raw water revenues.”
And Shamal believed, “These quantities of consumption reflect the complexity and difficulty of this situation; The agricultural sector in Iraq is still living in two important matters. The first is to continue the culture of water abundance, even though we live in an era of scarcity and water scarcity.
And he noted, "The second issue is the beginning of field irrigation methods associated with traditional tourist irrigation, which moves away from the means of technology, and these traditional methods are a pressing and influential matter."
And Shamal concluded, “The irrigation efficiency is less than 40%, and we hope that this efficiency will increase between 70 and 75%, and the difference between the two percentages reflects the state of waste that is happening at the present time.”
Iraq suffers from a serious water crisis due to the reduction in revenues from neighboring countries, as well as the scarcity of rain during the recent seasons, while observers warned against maintaining the extensive agricultural plans as they drain large amounts of water, calling for a reduction in the way that can be secured.
