    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Iraqi accountants and auditors are facing a number of criticisms, after a series of scandals in state institutions in accounts and auditing.
Observers via (Baghdad Today) criticized "the weak role of the Iraqi Accountants and Auditors Association, whose websites show its preoccupation with conducting courses in auditing and accounting without real tangible results."
The observers recalled "the theft of tax secretariats in the Rafidain Bank, known as (theft of the century), and its easy passage, as well as fake import invoices related to the purchase of dollars from the Central Bank, the absence of final accounts from state institutions, and many forgery scandals that pass through state institutions, as well as the reluctance to work in them."
All these scandals - as described by observers - are the responsibility of accountants and auditors in government institutions who belong to the Association of Accountants and Auditors, which is directly responsible for them, as no accountant or auditor can work or provide advice without belonging to the Association.
It is noteworthy that the case of (the theft of the century), which was revealed in mid-October 2022, involving former senior officials and businessmen, had sparked great discontent in oil-rich Iraq, where corruption is rampant.
Especially after a document from the General Tax Authority revealed that $2.5 billion was paid between September 2021 and August 2022 through 247 checks issued by five companies.
Then those funds were withdrawn in cash from the accounts of these companies, whose owners are subject to arrest warrants.
Iraq's current prime minister, Mohammed Shia'a al-Sudani, pledged to make eradicating corruption a top priority when he took office in late October.
