The Ministry of Transport reported that the European ban on Iraqi Airways aircraft is heading towards closure within the next six months, while Baghdad and Najaf airports are witnessing an increasing demand from travelers as the Arbaeen pilgrimage approaches.
The director of the ministry's media office, Maitham Al-Safi, told Al-Sabah: The European ban imposed on Iraqi Airways was the result of observations recorded by the European Safety Agency, as well as other aspects of the Civil Aviation Authority.
He explained that there is joint work between the airlines and the Civil Aviation Authority with continuous and studied steps to overcome the observations.
He pointed out that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will hold a meeting within the next six months to issue a decision regarding lifting the European ban on the national carrier and closing this file.
Al-Safi pointed out that the Ministry is working on concluding joint operating contracts for aircraft used for commercial purposes through a third operator, and this is a step that will achieve positive returns on the technical and commercial aspects of the air transport sector.
He explained that Baghdad and Najaf International Airports are witnessing an increasing turnout by travelers coinciding with the approach of the Arbaeen Pilgrimage, and a plan has been put in place to mobilize all 26 operating aircraft during the pilgrimage.
