Ahmed Abdul Hussein
The least corrupt countries are the politically, security and economically stable ones. This is self-evident, because security and economic loopholes are doors for small thieves to enter, while political turmoil is the wide open door for big ones.
Those stable countries are not completely devoid of corruption and corrupt people, as there are those in it who can play on legal tricks or take advantage of an interpretation in the constitution or ride on the back of ambiguous economic legislation, but he will still feel in his heart that he is not safe. The power of the government and the judiciary in such countries is enough to make the corrupt afraid of being destroyed.
Over the past years, the corrupt in Iraq were completely safe from being pointed at with the finger of accusation, except for press reports and documents published on communication sites and loud records on talk shows, and all of this would not have deterred them or reduced their appetite.
Political, economic and security turmoil was their vital field, so it was obvious that they would do everything in their power to perpetuate the turmoil in order to perpetuate their kingdom based on ill-gotten money.
However, for weeks we have been witnessing a remarkable escalation in the work of the Integrity Commission. Hardly a day goes by that does not bring with it the monitoring of large and small cases of corruption, in conjunction with the issuance of prison sentences against corrupt persons proven guilty.
This is cause for optimism. Yesterday, a statement by the political advisor to the prime minister caught our attention, in which he said, "In the coming days, we will witness the overthrow of great corrupt people, because there is seriousness in the Sudanese approach in this regard, and this is one of the priorities of his government program and with the approval of all political blocs."
Referring to the "approval of the political blocs" gives the statement more credibility, because lifting the political cover for these corrupt people is enough to strip them of their sharpest weapons. Then I added with a sentence that I think is the most important because it reveals an anticipation of what is to come based on information. He said, "We will witness that many political blocs will disavow the corrupt people affiliated with them in order to avoid any embarrassment that may be caused by their actions."
This noticeable escalation in the investigation of cases of corruption, the prosecution of the corrupt and the issuance of judgments against them, would make the corrupt fearful and hesitant and reduce their armies that used to do whatever they wanted without deterrence.
In issues related to integrity and preserving public money, exhuming the painful past and criminalizing its symbols becomes a necessary prelude to achieving a future free of corruption and the corrupt.
And if the pace of exposing the corrupt continues in this way, then we can truly hope for such a future.
