    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Wednesday (October 4, 2023), the head of the Wisdom Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, criticized the activities of the Iraq International Festival, which was held yesterday, Tuesday, in the celebration square in the center of the capital, Baghdad, on the occasion of the Iraqi National Day.
Al-Hakim said in a statement received by "Baghdad Today", "Celebrating a national or official occasion must not include disgraceful behavior outside of Iraqi traditions, societal norms, and moral standards."
He stated, “What happened in terms of some unfortunate actions and events during the celebration of the Iraqi National Day in the Celebration Square in Baghdad has nothing to do with what is acceptable to public taste, in addition to the fact that it included events and activities that harmed the nation’s great anniversary of its independence day.”
Al-Hakim added, "In order to ensure that such events that are alien to our society, traditions and customs are not repeated, we urge the concerned authorities to take the utmost caution and caution against turning the occasion into a vulgarity instead of a celebration," he said.
The Iraq International Festival, which was held last Tuesday night in Celebration Square in Baghdad on the occasion of the Iraqi National Day, sparked a wave of criticism and widespread dissatisfaction at both the official and popular levels, due to the appearance of some of its participants - Iraqi and Arab women - in costumes that some considered "scandalous."
Political parties issued several statements of condemnation and demands to hold those responsible for this festival accountable, while the government was not devoid of accusations leveled against it for allowing this festival to be held in central Baghdad.
The government disclaimed its responsibility for holding the festival, and the political advisor to the Prime Minister, Sobhan Mulla Jiyad, commented in a press statement, saying, “The Iraqi government has no relation to holding the Iraq International Festival, and the party organizing it is the artist Shatha Hassoun, with financial support from various companies.”
He considered, "The festival was exploited by some people and entities for political targeting against the current government, and an attempt to influence its performance and achievements with such noise, and the festival has nothing to do with the Iraqi National Day," he said.
