The Energy website, which specializes in following up on oil and gas files, announced the failure of negotiations between Iraq and Qatar to import Qatari gas to cover Iraqi demand.
The website said, quoting sources, that the Iraqi negotiations to import Qatari gas are stalled, and there is no intention to revive them at the present time at the high ministerial level, especially with the presence of technical reports indicating the difficulty of completing the deal.
She added that the visit of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity to Doha a few days ago did not succeed in reaching a new executive understanding, especially since Iraq needs a large infrastructure for imports through Al-Faw port.
Reports from the Ministerial Council for Energy indicated the high cost of establishing the necessary infrastructure to import gas from Qatar, and that the current priority is to complete the Turkmenistan deal, in addition to increasing opportunities for establishing renewable energy projects.
Over the past months, the file of the Iraqi import deal for Qatari gas has witnessed faltering at more than one point, as Iraq has moved the stagnant water in this file more than once, with the aim of securing the fuel necessary to operate the power stations, which from time to time face crises due to the decline in gas supplies. Iranian.
Sources expected that the implementation of this project would take about two to three years from now.
On August 8, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced the formation of a joint committee with the Ministry of Oil to discuss importing gas from both Qatar and Turkmenistan, to meet internal needs, according to what the specialized energy platform reviewed.
During 2022, Baghdad presented the issue of Iraq’s import of Qatari gas, as one of the most important alternatives that would enable it to diversify its sources of supply, in order to address the electricity crisis that recurs whenever Iranian gas supplies shrink, or falter for some reason, creating a crisis that strikes the stations.
The Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadel, had previously announced that the government had taken a set of decisions and formed a joint committee with the Ministry of Oil, headed by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity for Production Affairs and advisors to the Ministry of Electricity. The committee would go with a delegation to Turkmenistan, to study the possibility of contracting to import gas, and another delegation to Qatar.
It is noteworthy that Iraq uses natural gas to operate stations located in the center and south of the country, to generate up to 7 thousand megawatts per day, as the gas import bill amounts to about 8 trillion dinars ($6 billion), via tanker lines, with the Kurdistan region and Iran.
Iraq's import of Qatari gas is an important step that supports its new projects in the field of infrastructure, and these endeavors coincide with Baghdad's completion of a number of projects aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in gas and stopping imports, through an integrated plan to stop burning associated gas and expand its production projects.
Before negotiations on the Iraqi import deal for Qatari gas were completely halted, Baghdad announced many details related to the important deal, which was supposed to change the rules of the country’s energy game and give it the opportunity to catch its breath from the recurring electricity crises.
Last February, the spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Musa, announced that the arrival of Qatari gas to Baghdad awaits several steps, including rapid work to complete the infrastructure and logistical requirements, such as gas platforms and transportation pipelines.
Ahmed Musa said that the deal requires a time limit of 12 to 15 months, stressing that the Iraqi Council of Ministers instructed the concerned authorities, each according to their obligations, to quickly accomplish what is related to them, according to his statements - at the time - that were monitored by the specialized energy platform.
It is noteworthy that the negotiations for the Iraqi import deal for Qatari gas included Baghdad obtaining quantities of Qatari liquefied compressed gas, amounting to 1.5 million tons annually, which are the quantities that Doha announced its readiness to supply to Iraq.
