intends to open the Basra Refinery crushing unit using the catalyst (FCC) in early 2025.
The director of the quality control department at the refinery, Abdullah Abdul Shahid, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The company is working on opening this unit, which is... We will launch a giant refinery in early 2025 to be a great addition to the quality and serious method of dealing with crude oil and refining it.”
Shahid added, “Current refineries refine 50 percent of a barrel of oil, while the remainder is waste (RCR), and this loses a lot of the product. The modern method is to benefit from a barrel of oil so that it is all products,” noting that “it will be a qualitative shift in Basra Refinery. Shahid considered, "The opening of the fourth gasoline refining unit is a giant strategic project that will be added to the important projects in the country that provide local products, industrial security, and the concept of national energy and its security, so that the country will be self-sufficient in its products."
He stated that "after 2003, large quantities of cars entered Iraq, which was offset by a significant weakness in the refineries and engineers present in them, in addition to strategies that neglected this issue, which prompted the plans to include the construction of new refineries equivalent to what existed previously."
Shahid explained, "The Basra Refinery has three units. The first and second entered after 2003, while the third unit entered in 2018. They are large strategic units in the country. They receive a barrel of crude oil to extract gasoline, white oil, gasoline, and cooking gas products from it." He stressed that "the opening of the fourth unit contributed to increasing the fuel produced for local consumption in the Basra refinery by 25 percent, bringing its production to 280 thousand barrels per day after it had previously produced 210 thousand."
